DESCRIPTION:Mutations in the nature of scientific research and web technol
ogies have created new expectations for digital research libraries. Person
alization and customization services offer the potential to improve the us
er experience when interacting with digital resources which result in info
rmation overload while also taking advantage of personal documents\, links
and materials as a source for sharing data and collaboration.\nThe Resear
ch Library of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has designed and deplo
yed a new personalized web service to enhance scientific collaboration\, t
he MyLibrary @LANL portal. Supporting either individuals or groups\, MyLib
rary supports collections of personal links to electronic journals\, datab
ases\, and other web resources. It can be customized to reflect specific d
isciplines and research needs. The MyLibrary application differs from othe
r digital library portal projects in its shared collaborative capabilities
\, as well as through indirect collaboration with a defined user community
via an active recommendation system for electronic journals.\nThe talk wi
ll present the different facets of the portal.More information: http://lib

DESCRIPTION:The CERN Library\, in conjunction with the IT Department Books
hop\, is organizing a book fair on the 28 and 29 October. Some 15 major pu
blishers will be represented\, including 6 who will be here in person\, an
d more than 700 of their latest titles will be on display (for sale or ord
er). The major topics covered will be computing\, physics\, technology\, m
athematics\, engineering and popular science.\n Those present at this eve
nt will include Alpha Science\, Cambridge University Press\, Elsevier\, In
 stitute of Physics\, Microsoft Press\, O'Reilly\, OLF Switzerland\, Oxford
  University Press\, McGraw-Hill\, Springer\, Pearson\, Thali Switzerland\,
  Wiley\, World Scientific and Ebooks Corporation.\n \n 11.00 - Centra
 l Library (bldg. 52)The particle odysseyChristine Sutton / CERN\n CERN's
Christine Sutton is again contributing to making particle physics more eas
ily accessible to the general public as her book "The Particle Odyssey: A
Journey to the Heart of the Matter"\, co-authored with Frank Close and Mic
hael Marten\, now has been made available as paperback. \n \n The book\
, originally published in 2002\, is a revised version of the authors' "The
Particle Explosion" (1987) and it incorporates lots of new material. \n
 On Thursday\, 28th October\, at 11.00 in the Central Library Reading Room\
, Christine Sutton will meet her readers and talk about the challenge of e
xplaining complex scientific concepts for lay readers without oversimplify
ing them or patronizing the audience.12.00 - Salle Pauli (bldg. 60)The ele
 ctronic book library\n Stephen Cole / EBooks Corporation\n 14.00 - Centr
al Library (bldg. 52)Prestigious Discoveries at CERN\n Jean-Pierre Revol
 / CERN\n Based on the symposium "1973 : Neutral currents. 1983 : W & Z Bo
sons. The anniversary of CERN's discoveries and a look into the future"\,
organised last year\, Roger Cashmore\, Luciano Maiani and Jean-Pierre Revo
l have edited a proceedings that was recently published by Springer under
the title "Prestigious discoveries at CERN".\n \n As we all know\, the d
iscoveries of neutral currents and of the W and Z bosons marked a watershe
d in the history of CERN. The articles collected in this book have been wr
itten by distinguished physicists who contributed in a crucial way to thes
e developments. The book also contains a discussion of the future of parti
cle physics and gives an updated status of the LHC and its detectors curre
ntly being built at CERN. \n \n On Thursday 28th October at 14.00 in the
Central Library Reading Room\, Jean-Pierre Revol will meet the readers to
provide a short historical account of these discoveries and talk about ho
w he perceives the developments in physics that they have led to. \n 15.
 00 - Salle Pauli (bldg. 60)The electronic book library\n Stephen Cole / E
Books CorporationEbooks are emerging in academic libraries and most of the
publishers relevant to CERN activities are now entering the arena: Cambri
 dge \nUniversity Press\, Chapman & Hall\, CRC Press\, Kluwer\, Imperial Co
 llege Press\, Oxford University Press\, Springer\, Taylor & Francis\, Worl
d Scientific\, and even more are soon coming. \n\nTraditionally books not
held by the library\, have had to be borrowed from fellow libraries\, norm
ally including a small cost to cover the shipping and processing expenses.
With electronic books the shipping costs and delays are eliminated\, leav
ing room for a new concept of 'interlending'. Costs\, still to be covered
by the library\, previously associated with traditional interlibrary loan
could in this way be used to pay for temporary access to electronic books.
Such 'rented items' can possibly later be upgraded to become part of the
collection. Flags may be set to alert the librarian when a title has been
borrowed on short term \ncirculation a number of times and give the choic
e to purchase. The system can also be set to automatically purchase titles
after a set number of short term circulation loans have occurred.\n\nStep
hen Cole\, the founder of eBooks.com and a lifetime bibliophile\, will pre
sent how the system can be implemented to serve end users at CERN. 16.00 -
Central Library (bldg. 52)Infinitely CERN\n Corinne Menard / CERN\n CER
N and Editions Suzanne Hurter released last week the beautiful book\, "Inf
initely CERN"\, published in French under the title "Infiniment CERN\, Té
moins de cinquante ans de recherches"\, to commemorate the human and scien
tific adventure of CERN.\n \n The book\, intended for the general public
as well as for the personnel of CERN and its institutional\, industrial o
r scientific partners\, tells the history of CERN through the voices of th
ose who lived it. \n \n On Thursday\, 28th October\, at 16.00 in the Cen
tral Library Reading Room\, Corinne Menard\, who co-ordinated the writings
\, will meet the readers and talk about the conception of the project and
the difficulties in making a selection of the material to be used in such
a book. A book that many of us have strong opinions about - even before ha
ving looked at it .... \n The fair will take place on the first floor of
the Main Building (bldg.60)\, Salle des Pas Perdus\, and will be open from
10.00 to 17.00 on both days. \n In addition\, EBooks Corporation will d
escribe their electronic book system. We look forward to your support for
this initiative. Should you have questions or wish to make further suggest

1.00 - Central Library (bldg. 52) The physics of synchrotron radiation\n
Albert Hofmann\n CERN's Albert Hofmann had his book "The physics of syn
chrotron radiation" published earlier this year by Cambridge University Pr
ess. \n \n Synchrotron radiation is an important research tool for many
areas of particle physics. This book explains the underlying physics which
determines radiation properties\, presenting these properties in easily a
pplicable equations and figures. It describes the emission and propagation
of general synchrotron radiation and is a valuable reference for scientis
ts and engineers in the field of accelerators and for all users of synchro
 tron radiation.\n \n On Friday\, 29th October\, at 11.00 in the Central
Library Reading Room\, Albert Hofmann will meet his readers and talk abou
t the conception of the project and the attempts and traps that has to be
tackled throughout the writing process.\n 14.00 - Central Library (bldg.
52)How the Web was born\n James Gillies / CERNFour years ago Robert Caill
iau and James Gillies had the bestseller "How the Web Was born: The story
of the World Wide Web" published by Oxford University Press. These days it
is a book that is hard to find in bookshops as it is about to enter the s
tage "out of print".\n\nOffering its readers an unprecedented "insider's"
perspective\, this book was co-written by two CERN employees--one of whom\
, Robert Cailliau\, was among the Web's pioneers. It tells how the idea fo
r the Web came about at CERN\, how it was developed\, and how it was event
ually handed over at no charge for the rest of the world to use. \n \nOn F
riday 29th October at 14.00 in the Central Library Reading Room\, James Gi
llies will meet his readers and talk about what happened since he and Robe
rt Cailliau wrote the book\, some of the feedback they have received and t
 heir feelings for a possible 2nd edition or even a follow up.\n \n 15.00

les - 50 privileged years\n Jack SteinbergerNobel laureate and well-know
 n personality at CERN\, Jack Steinberger\, had his book «Learning about p
articles - 50 privileged years» published a few weeks ago by Springer. \n
\nThis book retraces vividly and in some depth the golden years of particl
e physics as witnessed by one of the scientists who made seminal contribut
ions to the understanding of the Standard Model. It will provide the inter
ested reader with a first hand account and deeper understanding of the mul
tilayered and sinuous development that finally led to the present architec
ture of this theory. \n \nOn Friday 29th October at 16.00 in the Central L
ibrary Reading Room\, Jack Steinberger will meet his readers and talk abou
t the conception of his book and his experiences as a physicist during the
last half century.\n The fair will take place on the first floor of the

DESCRIPTION:Konrad Kleinknecht had his book 'Uncovering CP Violation - Exp
erimental clarification in the K meson and B meson systems' published by S
pringer last fall. CP violation\, the breaking of the symmetry between mat
ter and antimatter\, was discovered by Christenson\, Cronin\, Fitch and Tu
rlay in 1964 at Brookhaven. Since 1965\, high precision experiments at CER
N have been performed in order to uncover the real nature of this phenomen
on. After nearly 40 years\, this series of CERN experiments succeeded in s
howing that CP violation is most likely to be due to weak flavour mixing o
f three families of quarks. The last step was completed by the NA31 and NA
48 Collaborations over a period of 17 years. The author participated in th
ese experiments from the very beginning in 1965. Recently CP violation has
also been found in decays of neutral B mesons\, in full agreement with th
e picture which emerged from the K decay experiments. Konrad Kleinknecht w
ill also be able to answer questions about his long-selling textbook on 'D
etectors for particle radiation'\, published by Cambridge University Press

DESCRIPTION:A cluster of five ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in the combine
d AGASA and HiRes stereo data are studied. The probability that the quad a
bove 37 EeV is a chance association is 0.1 %\, and the 5th event found whe
n the 214 HiRes events from 10-30 EeV are included has about an 85% chance
of being part of the same cluster. The random magnetic deflections these
UHECRs accumulated en route from their source is used to constrain the int
ervening magnetic fields. Galactic magnetic deflection appears to be small
er than predicted in some models. SDSS and other data is used to constrain
the source location and develop a hypothesis about the large scale struct
ure of cosmic magnetic fields. The spectrum gives con-straints on the natu
re of the source.Note: Please note unusual time!\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/

DESCRIPTION:Quality management is a necessity in a changing world. There i
s a demand for increased services and changed offers from the customers. T
here are also demands for efficiency and value for money from our funding
bodies. One way to meet these demands is to increase the knowledge about t
he library’s activities and to obtain tools for improvement. The Swedish
Quality Handbook Project supports the library in this. The aim of the “
Quality Evaluation Handbook” project is to help Swedish libraries in all
parts of the public sector to start conducting systematic quality managem
ent\, by utilising performance indicators. The project is intended to serv
e as a springboard for libraries interested in engaging in quality develop
ment. The co-operation is based on the collection of data for the twelve i
ndicators over a period of three years and a comparison of the results ove
r time and with those of other libraries. The project ended early 2005 and
has been evaluated during spring this year. The most important outcome fr
om the project is that it has led 50 Swedish libraries to start performing
systematic quality management. \n The project is run by The Specia
l Interest Group for Quality Management and Statistics within the Swedish
Library Association who plays an active role in encouraging Swedish librar
ies to engage in quality development and evaluation.Organiser(s): CERN Lib

DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, Google started Google Book Search\, comprising two v
ery widely discussed projects both aimed at making available a large body
of content that until now was not online. These projects are Google Book S
earch for Publishers and the Google Book Search Library project.\n The
goal of these projects is to improve access to information and cultural he
ritage.\n Each of the projects aims to help users find links to relevant
books in addition to Internet links in response to search terms and to di
splay relevant sections of those found. Contents are not duplicated: the u
ser cannot print\, save or download the data.\n Google is co-operating w
ith thousands of publishers in the Google Book Search for Publishers proje
ct. Books from participating publishers are scanned and made searchable fr
ee of charge to both publishers and users. Excerpts (snippets) are made av
ailable online and links provided to bookshops\, publishers or online sale
s points as appropriate. Google sees Google Book Search for Publishers as
an excellent tool to promote books.\n Currently\, 5 major libraries are
co-operating closely with Google in the library project (New York Public L
ibrary\, the university libraries of Stanford\, Harvard\, Oxford and Michi
gan). This program concentrates on scanning and making searchable books th
at are in public domain. A large part of these libraries' holdings will be
digitised\, thus improving access to old and rare items of cultural herit
age.\n These projects have given rise to intensive media discussion with
questions such as: in what ways can an Internet company influence the med
ia scene? What do these activities mean for the future of publishers and l
ibraries?\n Mr. Redmer will describe the projects in more detail and add
ress these and other questions.Library Science Talk programme 2006: http:/

DESCRIPTION:There is a change of paradigm going on in media right now. Tod
ay's readers and watchers are not satisfied with being passive receivers o
f information. They want to take part in the creation and publishing of co
 ntent.\n Internet\, broadband\, camera phones\, blogs and communities all
challenge the traditional role of editors and business models of media.\n
Norway's largest newspaper and internet site VG (www.vg.no) is among a h
andful traditional media houses in the world that has chosen to use this d
evelopment as an opportunity - not a threat. The result is better content
and journalism\, a stronger relationship with the readers\, and a fundame
ntal strengthening of peoples' possibility to express themselves\, argues

itiatives dans ce domaine.\nThe presentation will be in French. Questions

DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how the media work and why some topics
make it into the news and other don't? Would you like to know how to (and
how not to) give an interview to a journalist? With the LHC preparing for
first collisions at high energies\, the world's media are again turning th
eir attention to CERN. We're all likely to be called upon to explain what
is happening at CERN to media\, friends and neighbours. The seminar will b
e given by BBC television news journalists Liz Pike and Nadia Marchant\, a
nd will deal with the kind of questions we're likely to be confronted with
through the restart period.\n\nFollow the webcast: http://webcast.cern.ch
