DESCRIPTION: This is an initial run of this course. Participants will be
invited to discuss the course structure and material to help to improve fu
ture courses. \n\nPlease note: registration must close at 12:00 on Thursda
 y 5 July.\n\nThis course\, provided by the EU-funded project OMII-Europe\,
will give researchers:\n Understanding of production grid infrastructures
and middleware\n Practical experience in using three of the dominant midd
leware stacks: Globus\, gLite and UNICORE.\n An introduction to emerging g
rid standards\n An overview of OMII-Europe and its initiatives based upon
these standards.\n\nThe course is structured as:\n A morning of introducto
ry talks.\n Sessions with practically oriented introductions to job submi
 ssion on the different grid middleware - UNICORE\, globus\, gLite.\n A fin
al session in which the vision and goals of OMII-Europe are explained\, an
d the current state of grid interoperability is presented.\n\nOMII-Europe
is an EU-funded project which has been established to source key software
components that can interoperate across several heterogeneous Grid middlew
are platforms. The emphasis is on the re-engineering of software component
s rather than on the development of new technology. OMII-Europe will devel
op a repository of quality-assured Grid services running on these existing
major Grid infrastructures. The OMII-Europe goals are interoperability\,
quality-assurance and to establish itself as an impartial broker\, giving
advice on heterogeneous Grid solutions.\n\n\nPlease register if you wish t
o attend the event. The morning is free\, but those attending the complet
e course will be asked to pay £40 to cover the costs of catering.\n To re

DESCRIPTION:\n\nOverview\n\n\nThe Northwest Institute for Bio-Health Infor
matics and the training teams from the UK's National Grid Service and the
EU-funded OMII-Europe project invite you to participate in their introduc
tory course about e-Science technologies for bio and health informaticians
in the UK. This ‘hands-on’ course is aimed at those who are interest
ed in exploring the potential of grid computing to enhance their life scie
nces or health research. \n\n\nWith an emphasis on application to the Bio
/Health domain\, this course has been designed to:\nReveal and explain the
architecture of Grids. Grids provide infrastructure for collaboration\, b
y permitting resources such as computers\, data\, software to be orchestra
ted across and between research communities that span different organisati
ons. \nExplore the potential for established grids and e-science technolog
ies to enhance research.\nCommunicate an understanding of how to exploit G
rids\n\nThe course focuses on technologies and infrastructures that are in
production use at different scales (project\, national\, international)\,
and then explores progress towards what has sometimes been called “The
Grid.”\n\nAudience and pre-requisites\nThe course is primarily intended
for informaticians\, members of research projects who are responsible for
creating and deploying software applications for the bio/health domains.
Although prior experience of command-line or file editing using Linux will
be useful in a minority of the practicals\, this is not an essential pre-
 requisite.\n\n\nTeaching outcomes\nIn this course attendees will:\n Learn
and understand the concepts and architecture of Grids including the UK’s
National Grid Service (NGS) and the EU’s EGEE infrastructures.\n Learn
how e-Science technologies have been applied in the Bio/Health domain\n Ga
in hands on experience using a variety of software\, including for:\n Work
flow (with Taverna and also P-GRADE)\n Computation on Grids \nData managem
ent on Grids\n\n Gain insight into the challenges of using the technologie
s\n\nBy the end of the course attendees should be able to communicate effe
ctively about e-Science technologies\, and also have gained sufficient kno
wledge and hands-on experience to begin working with them\n\nLocation: Roo
 m IT407.\nSchool of Computer Science\, Kilburn Building\, Oxford Road\nA c
ampus map can be found here. Kilburn is building number 39\, in the centre
of the map. For more general information see here.\n(This building can
be seen from the main road - "Kilburn Building")\n Costs For participants
from a UK University or related institution\nthe course is free.\n Registr
ation Please register here. \n The following agenda is subject to minor
amendment. \n A booklet will be provided on the day\, but material that ha
s changed since printing or is not in the booklet will be available from t
 he NIBHI website.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=24

DESCRIPTION: This is a draft agenda being discussed among OMII-Europe part
ners with the intention of being tailored for delivery in events during F
ebruary/March 2008. No date for these events is fixed yet. To see details
of scheduled events\, go to http://training.omii-europe.org/.\n\n\nOMII-
Europe is creating standards-based middleware components that will permit
e-scientists to access resources runnning on grids that are based on any o
f the gLite\, UNICORE\, Globus or CROWN middleware. This course explains
the concepts behind the OMII-Europe project\, and gives experience of usin
g the components. \n\n\nThis one-day course will interest application deve
lopers who need grid interoperabillity - for example\, to run high-perfor
mance applications on UNICORE/DEISA and trivially parallelisable applicati
ons on gLite/EGEE\; to access data resources across grids via OGSA-DAI. I
t will also interest creators of higher middleware services - for example\
, brokers.\n\n It is assumed that participants will be familiar with the c
oncepts of grid computing. An extended course can be arranged if this is
not the case. \n\nThe goals of the course are to permit developers to begi
n to plan for use of the interoperable components provided by OMII-Europe\
, and to accomplish this by giving participants:\n an understanding of int
eroperability \n initial experience of OMII-Europe components based on gr
id standards\n an orientation to be able to further explore these compone
nts by use of the OMII-Europe Evaluation Infrastructure \n an introductio
n to the OMII-Europe repository from which the components can be downloade
d.\n\n\nto be determined:\ndate. location\n\n\n This draft agenda will be
tailored for different events\, and will also be revised in the light of d
ates of events and the release schedule fo components \n\nhttp://indico.ce
