DESCRIPTION:These lectures will give an overview of what happens when the
LHC is in running mode. \n\nThey are aimed at students working on the LHC
experiments\, but all those who are curious about what happens behind the
scenes of the LHC are welcomed. You will learn all you always wanted to kn
ow about the LHC\, and never had the courage to ask! \nThe only pre-requi
site is a basic\, college-level\, knowledge of EM and of the principles th
at allow to steer charged beams.\n\nTopics covered will include\, among ot
hers:\n\n- the description of the injector chain\, from the generation of
the protons\, to the delivery of bunches to the LHC.\n\n- the discussion o
f the steps required to accelerate the beams in the LHC\, to bring them in
to collision\, and to control the luminosity at the interaction points.\n\
n- the description of the monitoring tools available to the LHC operators\
, and an explanation of the various plots and panels that can be found on
the LHC web pages.\n\no Lecture 1: Wednesday April 7\, 10-11am\no Lecture
2: Friday April 9\, 10-11am\n\nThe lectures will be webcast\, recorded and
archived.\n\nCoffee will be served before the lectures\, starting at 9:45

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: From the civil engineering\, to the manufacturing of
the various magnet types\, each building block of this extraordinary mach
ine required ambitious leaps in innovation. This lecture will review the
history of the LHC project\, focusing on the many challenges -- scientific
\, technological\, managerial -- that had to be met during the various pha
ses of R&D\, industrialization\, construction\, installation and commissio
 ning.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=92218

DESCRIPTION:The lecture will touch on several topics\, to illustrate\n
the role of CERN in the present and future of high-energy physics: how\n
does CERN work? What is the role of\n the scientific community\, of b
odies like Council\n and SPC\, and of international cooperation\, in th
e definition of CERN's\n scientific programme? What are the plans for t
he future\n of the LHC and of the non-LHC physics programme? What is th
 e role\n of R&D and technology transfer at CERN?\n\nhttp://indico.cern.
