DESCRIPTION:The main focus of the workshop is on aspects of string theory
in relation to particle physics and cosmology. It is a satellite meeting o
f the Strings 2004 conference in Paris\, with a somewhat complementary pro
gram.\n In particular\, we will have review talks on the following topics
:\n – Physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC (F. Gianotti)\n –
Approaches to the hierarchy problem (N. Arkani-Hamed)\n – Cosmology: obs
 ervations and theoretical ideas (A. Linde)\n – Matrices\, strings and g
auge theories (H. Ooguri)\n – Perspectives in string theory (J. Maldacen
a)\n and a colloquium by D. Gross.\n In addition\, there will be various
short technical talks and three organized discussion sessions (led by H.
Verlinde\, A. Strominger and D. Gross). After the workshop\, there will be
some two weeks of less formally organized activities\, with typically two
talks per day only. A preliminary program will appear soon on our site.\n

DESCRIPTION:Proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions have long been recognized as a
crucial component of the LHC heavy ion program. However\, significant exp

DESCRIPTION:Proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions have long been recognized as a
crucial component of the LHC heavy ion program. However\, significant exp
erimental and theoretical developments have occurred in this area since th
e last broad-based discussions of p+A collisions at the LHC.\n In particu
lar\, d+Au measurements at RHIC have provided decisive benchmark experimen
ts for discoveries in the RHIC nucleus-nucleus program and show the potent
ial for elucidating the low-x structure of matter.\n \n The goals of th
is workshop are to assess the current state of the art in p+A physics\, an
d to identify the milestones required for optimal implementation of the p+
A running in the LHC program. The focus will be on the following topics:\n
\n LHC machine operation with p+A LHC experiments with p+Ap+A as a benc
hmark for A+A Small-x physics with p+A Ultraperipheral Collisions Programm
e09:00-09:30 Matteo Cacciari (LPTHE Jussieu) Heavy Quark production
  in p+p and p+A Collisions\n 09:30-10:00 Raffaele Grosso D0 reconst
ruction in pA collisions at ALICE\n 09:30-10:00 Fabio Maltoni (CERN TH)
      Z+jet production in pp and pA collisions\nCoffee Break\n 11:00-11:30
Kai Hencken (Univ. Basel) High energy photon interaction in p+A\
n 11:30-12:00 Krzystof Piotrzkowski Tagged photon interactions i
n pA collisions at the LHC\n 12:00-12:30 Sebastian White (BNL) H
 ard Photoproduction at Heavy Ion Colliders\nLunch Break\n 14:00-14:45 M
ark Strikman (Penn State) HERA III at LHC - ultraperipheral p+A Collis
 ions\n 14:45-16:00 All Concluding Discussion\nOrganiser(s): Peter J

DESCRIPTION:In the past few years\, spectacular progress was made in appli
cations of GEM and Micromega detector technologies. As discussions have al
ready started on the needs for LHC upgrade and for the future linear coll
ider programs\, the time has come to review the status\, running experienc
 e and perspectives of these so-called 'micro-pattern gas detectors' in a o
ne-day workshop.\n To better discuss the use of GEM and Micromega in the
next generation experiments\, an overview of the challenges of future col
liders will also be given.Organiser(s): Ariella Cattai\, Georges Charpak\,

DESCRIPTION:Dedicated to the memory of Francesco Ruggiero (1957-2007)This
workshop is organized by the "Accelerator Physics and synchrotron Design"
(APD) collaboration of the CARE-HHH European Network on "High Energy High
Intensity Hadron Beams". Also a contribution to the organization of the Wo
rkshop is provided through the CERN INTAS Collaborative project on Crystal
Channeling 2006-2008 and INFN. The goals of the workshop are to discuss i
f a new crystal collimation procedure assisted by bent crystals and suited
for collimation during the ultimate high-luminosity phase of the machine
and for new large colliders are possible. The use of Crystals in experimen
ts for the study of diffractive physics will be the second goal of the Wor
kshop.\nThe first part of the meeting will be devoted to a critical review
of the results obtained in the various laboratories where the channeling
techniques have been tested and implemented. The second part will be devot
ed to the presentation of new crystal production technologies and the poss
ible use of bent crystals in the LHC collimation system. During the third
and fourth part\, the possible assessment of the new crystals through expe
riments performed at the CERN-SPS (external beam lines) and at the Tevatro
n will be discussed\, new schemes for the collimation systems at LHC and n
ew colliders will also be presented. Finally new schemes of operations to
improve experimental studies of diffractive physics will be presented. Org
