DESCRIPTION:We list the spectrum generating algebras for string theory and
M-theory compactified on various backgrounds of the form AdS{d+1} x\nSn.
We identify the representations of these algebra's\, which make up the cla
ssical supergravity spectra and argue for the presence of\nthese spectrum
generating algebra's in the classical string/M-theory. We also discuss the
role of the spectrum generating algebra's on\nthe conformal field theory
 side.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=a033246

DESCRIPTION:The Nahm transformation maps SU(N) self-dual gauge fields of c
 harge k \non a torus\, to SU(k) self-dual gauge fields of charge N on the
dual torus. It forms an involution that preserves metric and hyperKahler s
tructure of the instanton moduli spaces. It can be put to practical use by
observing that charge 1 instantons are mapped to an abelian problem\, and
that non-compact directions (infinite periods) lead to dimensional reduct
ion on the dual torus. \nIntricate relations have been found\, partly base
d on numerical studies and partly on analytic results\, whose usefulness m
ay extend beyond gauge theory applications. We give an overview over the r
esults that have been obtained and the problems that still need to be reso
 lved.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=a033249

DESCRIPTION:I will discuss some aspects of the D1/D5 system\, the five-dim
ensional \nblack hole and the associated superconformal field theory (SCFT
) in 2 \ndimensions. We will briefly review how such a SCFT arises from th
e \ngauge theory of open strings on the D-brane system\, leading to a targ
et space which is an orbifold. The resulting twisted sectors lead to a dif
ferent 'effective string' picture than initially proposed and removes earl
ier discrepancies in Hawking radiation rates between brane computations an
d supergravity. We will discuss the issue of marginal decay and fragmentat
ion of the five-dimensional black holes in the absence of moduli. We will
discuss how to construct true bound states (stable black holes)\, both in
terms of supergravity and gauge theory. The gauge theory corresponding to
the stable D1/D5 system turns out to be non-commutative.\n\nhttp://indico.

DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the talk is to construct explicit configuration
s of D3-branes in type IIB string theory (concretely\, D3-branes at singul
arities)\, leading to world-volume field theories extremely similar to the
MSSM. In particular\, they produce SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) gauge group\, with th
ree generations of quarks and leptons. I will also discuss how these confi
gurations can be embedded in compact models preserving N=1 supersymmetry o
r breaking it in a hidden sector. These models provide explicit string the
ory realisations of the brane-world \nscenario\, with the Standard Model s
ector embedded in a set of D3-branes. The construction of the models follo
ws a bottom-up philosophy: In a first step one scans large families of sin
gularities\, and singles out those leading to phenomenological promising f
ield theories. In a second step\, one embeds such local structures in a gl
obal model\, namely a compact space. Many phenomenological issues\, like g
auge coupling unification\, proton stability\, etc\, are controlled by the
structure of the singularity\, and so are quite independent on the global
  structure of the compactification.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDis

DESCRIPTION:We compute the 4--dimensional cosmological constant in string
compactifications in which the Standard Model fields live on a non-supersy
mmetric brane inside a supersymmetric bulk. The cosmological constant rece
ives contributions only from the vacuum energy of the bulk supergravity fi
elds\, but not from the vacuum energy of the brane fields. The latter is a
bsorbed in a warp factor. Supersymmetry breaking on the brane at the TeV s
cale implies supersymmetry breaking in the bulk at the micrometer scale. T
his produces a tiny cosmological constant that agrees with experiment with
in a few orders of magnitude. Our argument predicts gravitinos and dilaton
s with masses of order 10-3 - 10-2 eV. They should be observable in short-

DESCRIPTION:I review recent ideas about the irreversibility of the RG flow
in even dimensions and \naddress the analogous problem in odd dimensions.
I construct a class of conformable \nwindows in three dimensions\, which
satisfy a manifest g 1/g duality and are \nexpected to be relevant to the
problem of irreversibility. I discuss the subset 'c=a' of \nD=3 conformab

DESCRIPTION:We find the phases and flavour symmetry breaking pattern of ea
 ch N=1 supersymmetric vacuum of SU(n)\, USp(2n) and SO(n) gauge theories\,
constructed from exactly solvable N=2 theories perturbing them with small
adjoin and generic quark masses. Monopoles of the maximal Abelian gauge s
ubgroup represent the low-energy degrees of freedom only in a restricted n
umber of vacua. In more typical vacua the constituents of the monopole\, d
ual quarks\, describe the low-energy physics. Their condensation induces c
onfinement and dynamical symmetry breaking simultaneously. In another clas
 s of vacua\, however\, the low-energy physics is described by non-trivial
interacting superconformal theories. For larger numbers of flavour\, there
are also vacua in the free magnetic phase.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/confe

DESCRIPTION:We show that a space-time with torsion and non-metricity\, obt
ained as a deformation of a Riemannian space-time\, accommodates an intern
al symmetry structure of the Yang-Mills prototype in such a way that the i
nternal symmetry becomes an integral part of the space-time itself. In par
ticular\, the space-time structural identities remain invariant with respe
ct to internal gauge transformations. The construction encrusts the intern
al degrees of freedom in space-time in such a way as to merge the gauging
of these internal degrees of freedom with the frame geometrical gauges of
space-time. In a Weyl Cartan space-time the theory regains the original co
nceptual structure of Einstein's equations\, in which ``matter'' sources o
n the r.h.s. determine on the l.h.s the geometry of space-time and the fie
lds it induces. In a genuine post-Riemannian space-time the connection at
the internal symmetry sector becomes scale-dependent\; the presence of an
Abelian component in it gives rise to new contributions of gravitational m
agnitude in the interaction between the Yang-Mills field and gravity. The
merger of space-time with internal degrees of freedom\, which we propose h
ere\, is not constrained by the usual Coleman-Mandula considerations.\n\nh

DESCRIPTION:It is known that there is no upper (extremal) limit on the spi

on only one plane. We first show that the shape of an ultra-spinning black
hole becomes highly flattened ('pancaked') along the plane of rotation\,
and then argue that\, indeed\, for high enough rotation these black holes
will likely become unstable. We discuss several possible modes for the dec

DESCRIPTION:We review the emergence of the ten-dimensional fermionic close
d string theories from subspaces of the Hilbert space of the 26-dimensiona
l bosonic closed string theory compactified on an E_8 times SO (16) lattic
 e. They arise from a consistent truncation procedure which generates space
-time fermions out of bosons. This procedure is extended to open string se
ctors. We prove that truncation of the unique tadpole-free SO (2^13) boson
ic string theory compactified on the above lattice determines the anomaly
free Chan - Paton group of the Type I theory and the consistent Chan - Pat
on groups of Type 0 theories. It also predicts the tension of space-fillin
g D-branes in these fermionic theories. The derivation of these fermionic
string properties from bosonic considerations alone points towards a dynam
ical origin of the truncation process. Space-time fermions and supersymmet
ries would then arise from bosonic degrees of freedom and no fermionic deg
rees of freedom would be needed in a fundamental theory of quantum gravity

DESCRIPTION:We give a pedagogical introduction to D-brane at angles mainly
focused in two applications: Intersecting Brane Models and Inflationary B
rane Scenarios. In the first part\, we discuss general features of these c
onstructions: low energy spectrum\, the tachyon structure\, supersymmetry\
, tadpoles\, anomaly cancellation\, etc. Then\, we briefly present string
(D-brane) constructions whose low-energy limit yields just a three generat
 ion SU(3 x SU(2 x U(1) standard model with no extra fermions nor U(1)'s (w
ithout any further effective field theory assumption). In the second part
of the talk\, we will comment on an interesting application of this kind o
f constructions to get inflaton like potentials within the string-D-brane
 theory framework.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=a03

DESCRIPTION:The local and global anomalies of non-commutative U(1) and U(N

the anomalies arising from non-planar diagrams of non-commutative gauge t
heories. We will show that non-commutative U(1) and U(N) with matter field
s in the adjoint representation are free of chiral anomaly. As it turns ou
 t\, non-commutative U(1) gauge theory possesses three different currents\,
only one of them leading to purely planar contributions to the anomaly. T
he second current yields\, due to UV/IR mixing\, a finite anomaly arising
only from non-planar diagrams. The result contains a so-called 'generalize

DESCRIPTION:The pp-wave (Penrose limit) in conformal field theory can be v
iewed as a special contraction of the unitary representations of the confo
rmal group. We study the kinematics of conformal fields in this limit in a
geometric approach where the effect of the contraction can be visualized
as an expansion of space-time. We discuss the two common models of space-t
ime as carrier spaces for conformal fields: One is the usual Minkowski spa
ce and the other is the coset of the conformal group over its maximal comp
act subgroup. We show that only the latter manifold and the corresponding
conformal representation theory admit a non-singular contraction limit. We
also address the issue of correlation functions of conformal fields in th
 e pp-wave limit. We show that the (two-point) correlators have a well-defi
ned contraction limit if their space-time dependence merges with the depen
dence on the coordinates of the R symmetry group. This is a manifestation
of the fact that in the limit the space-time and R symmetries become indis
tinguishable. Our results might find applications in actual calculations o
f correlation functions of composite operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills the
