DESCRIPTION:This tutorial presents a simple explanation of the fundamental
ideas behind the so-called Object Oriented Paradigm. With a general appro
ach\, it will provide you with the basic understanding to be able to think
OO and learn OO languages and techniques. Aspects like maintenance and re
use of code\, quality\, and large projects design and implementation will
be discussed within the OO framework\, and some of the reasons behind such
benefits will be outlined. \n\nThe talk will be general enough not to req
uire any previous knowledge of any programming language but some insight i
n software development would be convenient. In the same way\, the talk wil
l give you the basics to learn any OO based methodology or language. \n\nT

DESCRIPTION:Microsoft Access 97 is the application included in MS Office 9
7 for data storage and manipulation. It uses proper Relational Database Ma
nagement System (SQL) technology\, like Oracle\, and is suited to the crea
tion and management of small databases for personal use. It can also inter
face with CERN workgroup databases where the data is stored on the central
or workgroup Oracle servers.\nIt provides a set of tools\, called Wizards
\, to simplify most of the tasks required to develop tables\, SQL queries
and reports. Simple visual tools can be used to create forms to enter and
manipulate the data and all tasks can be automated by means of Visual Basi
c for Application modules and ActiveX objects.\nAccess 97 connectivity fea
tures are very good and allow to import or link data from a wide range of
external sources\, from simple text to Oracle databases. In addition\, dat
abases can also be published to a WWW server in HTML format for use across
an intranet or the Internet.\nThis tutorial provides a step-by-step guide
through the design and management of a simple\, but full-featured databas

DESCRIPTION:WebLib II is the second release of a Web-based interface to th
e CERN library databases (or catalogues). WebLib II allows you to navigate
and search through the rich collection of CERN document databases which n
 ow includes: e-prints\, books\, periodicals\, photos\, videos\, press cutt
ings and more. \nAfter introducing the tool and demonstrating its use\, we
  will describe the technology being used (HTML/CSS - PHP/Perl - MySQL - C
 - DBS API)\, compared with other possible techniques. We will focus on the
modularity of the design which enables the easy introduction of new catal
ogues\, with their own specific features. We will explain how a commercial
hierarchical library database system (Aleph/ExLibris) has been customised
to handle many kinds of documents. Finally\, we will outline the importan
ce of the architecture with the two main servers\, the meta-data server an
d the data server. \nThe talk is open to everyone. Users of WebLib can lea
rn how to find documents more rapidly with the new interface. The talk may
be especially interesting to people\nsetting up electronic catalogues or
writing a Web interface to a database system. Organiser(s): M.Marquina and

DESCRIPTION:The library has constantly increased the number of electronic
fulltext documents\, which can be retrieved from its web catalogue. For so
me type of documents\, the electronic format has simply replaced the paper
form\, which is no longer distributed. \n\nAt the same time\, the text ed
itors used by authors have unfortunately not converged to create a single
format. On the contrary\, the CERN Document Server is now receiving source
files in a wide range of different formats. If these documents were kept
in their original format\, not only most of the readers would not be able
to look at them today but also in a few years from now\, nobody would have
the proper tool for reading them! \n\nFacing this situation\, the Library
Support section in the AS-Document Handling group has gained expertise in
file-format conversions and is now proposing a CERN-Wide Web-based conver
sion service\, which is fully automated. \n\nIn this talk\, we will discus
s the importance of file-format conversion for long-term electronic archiv
ing\, we will introduce the Conversion Service and we will give an overvie
w of the different formats involved. The architecture of the system\, base
d on different servers for converting different files\, will also be expla

DESCRIPTION:EDS is a configurable Web-based tool to enable the capture of
meta data and the transfer of documents from an author or \\"Submitter\\"
to the CERN Document Server. It deals with many different document types
 \, like press cuttings\, e-books\, preprints\, photos\, etc. A wide range

DESCRIPTION:The tutorial will describe the building blocks behind the proc

\nthrough the use of the stream classes in the standard java.io \npackage.
Streams are a useful way to handle information flowing \nin and out of yo
ur program in an homogeneous way (to read/write \nthe file system\, memory
locations\, through network connections\, \netc.). They also provide the
basis to implement lightweight object \npersistence: objects can be easily
sent and received through \nstreams\, with which we can store and retriev
 e objects from files\, \nfrom the network\, etc.\n\nThe tutorial will focu

DESCRIPTION:Storing Web addresses in a database is very awkward because do
cument \nURLs may change and become out of date. To avoid this trap within
the \nCERN library databases\, we have developed a Link Manager called 'S
etlink'. \nAll electronic documents kept in the library system (more than
 400K) are uniquely identified by a long-term URL\, pointing to a program w
hich finds out the real location of files. When the storage system changes
or files are renamed\, the Link Manager is simply updated and all the URL
s remain valid. \n\nThis talk will stress the importance of using a Link M
anager for any \nlong-term Web server. It will explain how the Setlink Lin
k Manager is \ndesigned to handle a wide range of document types and forma
ts\, from \nphotos in JPEG to eprints in PDF. We will describe the method
used on the library database side and we will outline the flexible 'Setlin
k' architecture. \nSome examples will be demonstrated. Finally\, we will f

automatic figures extraction or concatenation\, fulltext searching and on-

DESCRIPTION:The Java Native Interface (JNI) is the native programming inte
rface for Java that is part of the JDK. By writing programs using the JNI\
, you ensure that your code is completely portable across all platforms.\n
\nThe JNI allows Java code that runs within a Java Virtual Machine (VM) to
operate with applications and libraries written in other languages\, such
as C\, C++\, and assembly. In addition\, the Invocation API allows you to
embed the Java Virtual Machine into your native applications.\n\nProgramm
ers use the JNI to write native methods to handle those situations when an
application cannot be written entirely in the Java programming language.
For example\, you may need to use native methods and the JNI in the follow
ing situations:\n\n* The standard Java class library may not support the p
latform-dependent features needed by your application.\n\n* You may alread
y have a library or application written in another programming language an
d you wish to make it accessible to Java applications. \n\n* You may want
to implement a small portion of time-critical code in a lower-level progra
mming language\, such as assembly\, and then have your Java application ca
ll these functions.\n\nThe tutorial will show the basic conceptualisations

DESCRIPTION:JavaBeans brings component technology to the Java platform. Wi
th the JavaBeans API you can create reuseable\, platform-independent compo
nents. Using JavaBeans-compliant application builder tools\, you can combi
ne these components into applets\, applications\, or composite components.
JavaBean components are known as Beans.\n\nComponents expose their featur
es (for example\, public methods and events) to builder tools for visual m
anipulation. A Bean's features are exposed because feature names adhere to
specific design patterns. A 'JavaBeans-enabled' builder tool can then exa
mine the Bean's patterns\, discern its features\, and expose those feature
s for visual \nmanipulation. A builder tool maintains Beans in a palette o
r toolbox. You can select a Bean from the toolbox\, drop it into a form\,
modify it's appearance and behaviour\, define its interaction with other B
eans\, and compose it and other Beans into an applet\, application\, or ne
w Bean. All this can be done without writing a line of code. \n\nThe tutor

DESCRIPTION:Nowadays\, several projects have become so complex and large t
hat are \nnow impossible to develop and maintain as a single monolithic bl
ock. On the other hand\, an increasingly important problem for application
s is to acquire as much functionality as possible\, reusing software witho
ut accumulating unneeded functionality and\, thus\, not wasting resources.
\nThese and other problems triggered the development of new strategies. In
particular\, the use of plugins and components which\, using some old pri
nciples of modularity and implementation facilities like shared libraries
and middleware (e.g.\, CORBA)\, allow us to overcome these problems in a c
lean and standard way.\nThis tutorial aims to provide a clear and precise
description of these paradigms. Special attention is also given to how the
se paradigms can be developed and to implementation issues like shared lib
raries and CORBA. To illustrate it\, several examples are given. A short d

DESCRIPTION:This tutorial presents a simple explanation of the fundamental
ideas \nbehind the so-called Object Oriented Paradigm. With a general app
roach\, it will provide you with the basic understanding to be able to thi
nk OO and learn OO languages and techniques. Aspects like \nmaintenance an
d reuse of code\, quality\, and large projects design and implementation w
ill be discussed within the OO framework\, and some of the reasons behind
such benefits will be outlined. The talk will be general enough not to req
uire any previous knowledge of any programming language but some insight i
n software development would be convenient. In the same way\, the talk wil
l give you the basics to learn any OO based methodology or language. This
is a repetition of \nthe presentation given several times in the IT Inform

DESCRIPTION:The Java Native Interface (JNI) is the native programming inte
rface for Java that is part of the JDK. By writing programs using the JNI\
, you ensure that your code is completely portable across all platforms. T
he JNI allows Java code that runs within a Java Virtual Machine (VM) to op
erate with applications and libraries written in other languages\, such as
C\, C++\, and assembly. In addition\, the Invocation API allows you to em
bed the Java Virtual Machine into your native applications. Programmers us
e the JNI to write native methods to handle those situations when an appli
cation cannot be written entirely in the Java programming language. For ex
ample\, you may need to use native methods and the JNI in the following si
tuations: \n\n* The standard Java class library may not support the platfo
rm-dependent features needed by your application. \n\n* You may already ha
ve a library or application written in another programming language and yo
u wish to make it accessible to Java applications.\n\n* You may want to im
plement a small portion of time-critical code in a \nlower-level programmi
ng language\, such as assembly\, and then have your \nJava application cal
l these functions. The tutorial will show the basic \nconceptualisations a

DESCRIPTION:JavaBeans brings component technology to the Java platform. Wi
th the JavaBeans API you can create reusable\, platform-independent compon
ents. Using JavaBeans-compliant application builder tools\, you can combin
e these components into applets\, applications\, or composite components.
JavaBean components are known as Beans. Components expose their features (
for example\, public methods and events) to builder tools for visual manip
ulation. A Bean's features are exposed because feature names adhere to spe
cific design patterns. A 'JavaBeans-enabled' builder tool can then examine
the Bean's patterns\, discern its features\, and expose those features fo
r visual manipulation. A builder tool maintains Beans in a palette or tool
box. You can select a Bean from the toolbox\, drop it into a form\, modify
it's appearance and behaviour\, define its interaction with other Beans\,
and compose it and other Beans into an applet\, application\, or new Bean
. All this can be done without writing a line of code. The tutorial will s

 e reusable Java components (Beans).Organiser(s): M.Marquina and R.Ramos /I

DESCRIPTION:UML has been present in the industry for several years already
\, mainly perceived as a result of standardized aggregation of object mode
ling techniques which had existed before. As the need to delete the techno
logy gap between nowadays extended relational model\, management and progr
amming techniques arises - adoption of already present standard for relati
onal world seems to be very attractive. The tutorial will portray current
state of the art of UML practices as part of Rational Unified Process or X
P approaches in the context of Oracle RDBMS. Tutorial will include discuss
ion on notation\, tools and use cases of database modeling in UML. Some in
formation on other emerging standards like Common Warehouse Meta-model (CW

DESCRIPTION:The aim of this lecture is to give you an idea of what databas
e performance tuning is from the point of view of an application developer
and not that of a DataBase Administrator (DBA). \n Why do we need to tu
ne at all? How can we make tuning experts unnecessary? Application tuning
is the main topic of the lecture and its substantial part is devoted to SQ
L statement tuning. But the larger picture is also there! Common pitfalls
are listed and you will see real life examples and problems.Come to this l
ecture if you want to learn:What tuning is\, why it's perceived as magic a
nd how to tame it\,When to start tuning a database application\,What techn
iques and tools to use\,What is an SQL optimizer and how to make it work b
etter\,How to read an execution plan\,What types of indexes to use and why
\,Why timing and logging is so important\,Why avoid using optimizer hints.
