 on\, signal conditioning\, motion control\, RS-232\, GPIB\n
instrumentation\, and Ethernet connectivity. With the various hardw

precise needs today\, while the modularity of the system means you can add

DESCRIPTION:The growing use of embedded processors has resulted in conside
rable challenges for software and system developers\, to ensure that the p
roducts they produce function as required\, without error. The increasing
complexity of these products\, and the systems they operate in\, adds to t
he difficulty in testing these products effectively. These challenges will
apply to the development of equipment and software for use on the LHC pro
ject. \nThis seminar is aimed at anyone involved in the development and/or
in the verification of embedded hardware\, software or systems at CERN. I
t will provide an introduction to testing embedded products\, and some ins
ights into ways to address the growing complexity of modern embedded produ
cts. \nIt will also show some of the methods Seven Layer Communications Lt
 d. have applied in developing effective test facilities for these products
. \nSeven Layer Communications Ltd. are specialists in testing embedded pr

DESCRIPTION:The development of High Temperature Superconductors\, seen fro
m a materials scientist's point of view\, is relevant to the superconducti
vity community at CERN: their possible high current applications can inclu
de high performance magnets for future accelerators. There is an urgent ne
ed to develop a quantitative description of HTS conductors in terms of the
ir complex anisotropy\, inhomogeneity and dimensionality. This is essentia
l both for the practical specification of a conductor and for charting rou
tes to conductor optimisation. The critical current\, the n-value\, dissip
ation and quenching characteristics are amongst most important parameters
that make up an engineering specification. \nA brief introduction will fir
st be given of the turbulent early years of research that followed the dis
covery of HTS by Bednorz and Müller in 1986. Progress in the development
of practical conductors will be summarised\, and the vital role of grain b
oundaries and grain texture described. Then the important problem of curre
nt percolation in granular structures and current injection at contacts an
d shunts will be addressed. There are three components to the percolation
problem\,\n\n(i) the characteristics and properties of individual grains a
nd grain boundaries\, \n\n(ii) the microstructure\, texture and grain morp
hology\, and \n\n(iii) the macroscopic geometrical constraints such as con
ductor size and shape\, and the direction of the magnetic field and its hi

in understanding and areas of neglect discussed. Organiser(s): Davide Vit

DESCRIPTION:The basic ideas behind modern Analogue to Digital and Digital
to Analogue (AD/DA) conversion methods will be introduced: a general view
of the importance of these devices will be given\, along with the digital
representation of time-varying\, real-world analogue signals. Some CERN ap

limitations\, error sources and measurement methods will form the major pa

DESCRIPTION:Laser trackers are used at CERN for different applications wit
hin the LHC Project. Leica Geosystems AG have been developing during the l
ast four years the revolutionary Local Positioning Technology (LPT).\n \n
Laser trackers are increasingly used to ensure accuracy of large fabrica
tions\, and alignment in the final assembly process. Competing portable Co
ordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) with articulated arms require a frequent
repositioning\, known to lead to a loss of accuracy and efficiency. Leica
Geosystems developed armless solutions\, the T-Probe and T-Scan\, for use
with its laser trackers. The combination of the tracker technology with p
hotogrammetry is the base of LPT\, enabling real time measurements with fr
 ee hand-held devices\, such as the T-Probe and T-Scan.\n \n T-Probe and
T-Scan overcome the problems that plagued the laser tracker industry\, the
need for a direct line of sight to perform measurements. The T-Probe is m
ade of a carbon fibre composite\, insensitive to temperature changes and s
 hock-resistant. Completely wireless\, ultra-light\, the T-Probe can be use
d for easy and flexible measurements of any geometry in large volumes. Usi
ng its remote trigger\, measurements can be taken within areas of up to 30
meters. The T-Scan captures 10\,000 points per second\, offering the bene
fit of digitizing large objects quickly. It is insensitive to different su
rfaces and needs no surface preparation.\n \n Leica Geosystems also focu
s on software innovations aimed at running standard Coordinate Measuring M
achines and CAD software with laser trackers. The new emScon open software
interface enables the embedding laser trackers in any application softwar
e: with this web solution measurements are possible via the web.\n \n 10

DESCRIPTION:Two PhD physicists will talk about their experiences of workin
g in investment banking\, describing what investment banks do and the job
s which attract physicists and engineers. They will introduce the derivat
ives markets\, and explain the need for advanced modelling. In particular
\, they will present the many modelling techniques used\, including Monte
Carlo simulation\, solving PDEs\, stochastic calculus and data analysis.
They will describe a typical day for a physicist in the world of finance\
, and present a case study in which they will show how they used an ide
a from physics to solve a finance problem.\nAfter a PhD and CERN fellowshi
p on OPAL in the 1990s\, Oliver Cooke moved to finance. He was initially a
mathematical modeller of derivatives\, and now is an exotic derivatives t
rader at Lehman Brothers in London. He will be joined by Zhengyun Hu who r
uns Fixed Income quantitative research at Lehman Brothers in London\, and
has a PhD in Fluid Mechanics from Imperial College\, London.Organiser(s):

DESCRIPTION:The range of power management products available today offers
the possibility to find the best solution for each application. To select
the right product it is therefore necessary to understand system requireme
nts\, how power supply products work\, and where they differentiate.\n\nTh
is Technical Training Seminar will also present an overview of how to choo
se the right RF platform based on markets and applications: nowadays almos
