DESCRIPTION:The seminal paper "Photo-ionization and Cherenkov ring imaging
 "\, written by J. Seguinot and T. Ypsilantis thirty-five years ago\, paved
the way to the development of a very powerful and versatile particle iden
tification technique. Detectors based on the Cherenkov light imaging have
played a key role in several high energy physics experiments and they stil
l represent the best choice for achieving a high quality particle discrimi
nation in the challenging conditions of the future projects. The most sig
nificant advances and perspectives of such detectors will be reviewed.\n\n
