Products of hard processes\, which take place in the early stage of\nthe collision\, are highly sensitive pr obes to the evolution of the created system.\nSuppression of the quarkoniu m J/\\psi\, which constitutes such a probe\, has been\nmeasured by the PHE NIX experiment at RHIC in AuAu\, CuCu\, dAu and pp interactions\, as\na fu nction of impact parameter\, rapidity and transverse momentum.\n\nThe stro ng suppression factors observed in central collisions in heavy ion systems \nsuggest that cold nuclear matter effects such as shadowing and nuclear a bsorption are\nnot the only mechanisms involved. On the other hand\, suppr ession due to color\nscreening effects alone seems to overestimate the sup pression measured both at\nforward rapidity and at mid rapidity. PHENIX al so measures a stronger suppression at\nforward rapidity compared to the on e measured at mid rapidity. Regeneration has been\nsuggested as a possible explanation for these observations. Here\, models that combine\nin differ ent ways a regeneration scenario with color screening and cold nuclear\nef fects will be compared to the data. Despite low integrated luminosity\, it was shown that\nthe sqrt(s)=62GeV data have com parable sensitivity to the gluon\npolarization through the high x_T=2p_T/s qrt(s) region.\nIn addition\, various channels such as partial jets\, char ged pions\, direct\nphotons in the central rapidity region\, large rapidit y J/psi's through the\nmuon channel and pi0's in a newly installed large r apidity electromagnetic\ncalorimeter will provide complementary results.\n We also measure double helicity asymmetries of the average intrinsic k_T\n by 2-particle correlations\,which may be sensitive to the These upgrades will enhance the ability of PHENIX\nto pursue a rich program of spin physics in polarized p roton collisions\, in\nparticular at sqrt(s) = 500 GeV. The VTX and FVTX detectors will provide a larger x\nrange over which the gluon polarization (Delat-G/G) can be determined and allow for a\ndirect measurement of spin asymmetry in beauty production. The Nosecone Calorimeter\nwill provide hi gh-segmentation electromagnetic calorimetry at high rapidity to open a\nwi de variety of channels through measurements of photons and electrons. It w ill also\nprovide improved constraints on parton kinematics. The Muon Trig ger Upgrade will\nallow the experiment to select high momentum muons from the decay of W bosons and\nreject both beam-associated and low-momentum co llision background\, enabling the study\nof quark and antiquark polarizati on in the proton trough the use of parity violating\n(single longitudinal spin) asymmetries. The combination of all three of these\nupgrades enable a complementary\, comprehensive physics program. Freiburg)\nAn important mi ssing piece in our understanding of the spin structure of the\nnucleon is the transversity distribution function Delta_Tq(x). It is only\none of the three leading-twist quark distribution functions q(x)\, Delta q(x)\nand D elta_Tq(x) that so-far remains unmeasured. The function Delta_Tq(x)\ndesc ribes the distribution of transversely polarized quarks in a transversely \npolarized nucleon. It is difficult to measure Delta_Tq(x)\, since it is a\nchiral-odd function which can only be probed in combination with anothe r\nchiral-odd function. One suggested probe to access transversity is the\ nmeasurement of two-hadron production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic\nsc attering on a transversely polarized target. In this case\, transversity i s\naccessible via the chiral-odd two-hadron interference fragmentation fun ction\nH_1^\\sphericalangle(z\,M_h^2). The COMPASS experiment has measured target\nsingle-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of hadron pa irs. The data\npresented have been taken scattering a 160 GeV muon beam of f a transversely\npolarized deuterium target. The scattered hadrons have b een identified as pions\nand kaons using the information of a ring imaging Cherenkov detector. We show that\nthe coupling of the relevant soft gluon to partonic su bprocess can be\nsystematically disentangled\, so that the corresponding i nterfering amplitude\ncan be calculated entirely in terms of the partonic cross section for 2-to-2\nBorn subprocess which participates in the twist- 2 cross section formula. the nucleon structure be yond the standard parton distributions. The Deeply Virtual Compton Scatter ing (DVCS) process\, i.e. the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photo ns\, provides the theoretically cleanest access to the GPDs. DVCS amplitud es can be measured most readily through the interference between the Bethe -Heitler process and the DVCS process.\nAzimuthal cross-section asymmetrie s are generated by both the real and imaginary parts of the DVCS amplitude with respect to the charge and helicity of the incoming lepton\, and with respect to the spin polarization of the target\, either longitudinal or t ransverse with respect to the lepton beam. The accumulated HERMES data off ers access to all of these spin and charge degrees of freedom\, and the co mbined set of asymmetry measurements allows independent access to the four GPDs in different combinations. An overview of these results will be pre sented. In particular\, a recent highlight has been the measurement of the DVCS azimuthal asymmetry using a transversely-polarized hydrogen target. This particular asymmetry is sensitivite to the GPD $E$\, related via the Ji sum rule to the total\nangular momentum of quarks within the proton. By comparing the HERMES result and the theoretical predications based on the GPD model\, a model-dependent constraint on $J_u$ and $J_d$ has been obta ined.\n\nIn late 2005\, a Recoil Detector was installed at HERMES with the purpose of greatly improving the experiment's ability to measure hard-exc lusive processes during its final running period. We first consid er the double transverse-spin asymmetry A_{TT}(Q_T) \nin the transversely polarized Drell-Yan process in detail\, in particular\,\nin the small Q_T region\, where the bulk of dileptons are produced.\nThe large logarithms d ue to the soft gluon emission at small Q_T are\nresummed in the Drell-Yan cross sections at the next-to leading\nlogarithmic (NLL) accuracy\, employ ing the impact parameter b-space\nformulation. The numerical calculation s hows that the effects of the\nsoft gluon resummation to the polarized and unpolarized cross sections \nlargely cancel in A_{TT}(Q_T)\, but the signi ficant corrections still remain. \nIn particular\, as a result of the resu mmaiton\, the flat behavior of A_{TT}(Q_T) \nis generically observed in th e small Q_T region\, from Q_T =0 to the peak region \nof the cross-section Q_T-spectrum\, indicating that the Q_T =0 limit of A_{TT}(Q_T) \nis theor etically a useful quantity. We evaluate the impact parameter b-integral \ nin the resummed cross sections at Q_T=0 by the saddle-point method\, and derive \na novel asymptotic formula of A_{TT}(Q_T =0)\, which obeys a rema rkably simple analytic \nform and is exact when the dilepton mass Q is lar ge. We prove that the consi stent\nuse of the Ward identity for color gauge invariance is crutial to\n obtain the factorization property and the gauge invariance of the\ntwist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section. This proof had been missed\nin the previous literature. As an application\, we present a complete\ntwist-3 c ross section formula for SSA for semi-inclusive deep inelastic\nscattering in terms of the complete set of the twist-3 quark-gluon\ndistributions wh ich include all kinds of pole (soft-gluon-pole\,\nsoft-fermion-pole and ha rd-pole) contributions. We start from a detailed study of th e zeta = 0 case where H and E are determined using constraints from simult aneous fits of experimental data on both the nucleon elastic form factors and the deep inelastic structure functions [1]. Lattice calculations of th e higher moments of GPDs [2\,3] allow us in principle to constrain the par ametrization at zeta > 0. Since lattice calculations are at present limite d to large quark masses\, we extrapolate to the chiral limit by using the technique devised in [4] to obtain the nucleon form factor dipole masses. We then perform a reconstruction of the GPDs using Bernstein polynomials. The inclusion in our fit\, of recent precise Jefferson Lab data on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering [5] is also discussed. Our method provides an a lternative to the mathematical ansatz of double distributions in that GPDs are generated from direct constraints from experimental data combined wit h lattice calculations.\n\n[1] S. Armine (DESY)\nHard exclusive meson prod uction in deep inelastic lepton scattering provides access to the unknown Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) of the nucleon. GPDs parameterize the nucleon structure and provide a unified description of exclusive and i nclusive reactions.\nPredictions based on a GPD model have shown that the transverse target spin asymmetry of exclusive $\\rho^0$ mesons is sensitiv e to the GPD $E$\, and thus\, to the total angular momentum of quarks. Hen ce\, this transverse target spin asymmetry is a key observable to study t he contribution of the orbital angular momentum of quarks to the spin of t he proton.\n\nThis talk will report on the preliminary measurement of the transverse target spin asymmetry of exclusive $\\rho^0$ mesons on a polari zed hydrogen target at HERMES using the $27.6$ GeV HERA positron beam. Sin ce the factorization theorem is proved for longitudinally polarized photon s only\, a matter of theoretical interest is the asymmetry of $\\rho^0$ me sons induced from longitudinal photons. The $\\rho^0$ electroproduction da ta\nsupports the fact that the $s$-channel helicity conservation holds to a good accuracy. This implies that a longitudinally polarized vector meson originates from a longitudinal polarized photon. Two experiments have been recently performed investigatin g GPDs via the DVCS reaction off the proton and off the neutron. They invo lve the HRS spectrometer for the detection of the scattered electron and a new PbF2 calorimeter for the detection of the emitted photon. The latte r was specially designed to sustain luminosities of 4.10^37 cm^-2/s in th e direct vicinity of the target\, and at small angles. The difference betw een cross sections for opposite longitudinal polarization of the electron beam and the unpolarized cross secttion have been measured. The experimen t on the proton provided strong indication supporting factorization at Q^2 as low as 2 GeV^2\, therefore validating a GPD based analysis. The unpola rized cross section data provided evident deviations from the Bethe-Heitle r cross section\, leading to an integral measurement of GPDs.
