DESCRIPTION:General aspects of thermal particle production from a relativi
 stic medium are reviewed. In particular\, a "hard" kinematic regime in whi
 ch next-to-leading order corrections are of modest magnitude\, is contrast
 ed with a "soft" regime\, in which it is a challenge to obtain a consisten
 t leading-order result\, and next-to-leading order corrections could be su
