DESCRIPTION:Mechanical measurements are needed in a large variety of activ
ities at CERN. The Mechanical Measurement Lab of EN/MME group is equipped
to perform a very large range of mechanical tests at ambient as well as cr
yogenic temperatures and in magnetic fields. In particular for the R&D pro
gram of new magnets\, force transducers based on strain and capacitive gau
ges are developed and used at CERN. In 2010\, the generation of new data a
cquisition systems allows to measure simultaneously the strain gauges\, th
e capacitive gauges and other external parameters (current\, temperature\,
etc…). Mechanical measurements at CERN include also other fields of int
erest such as mechanical failure analysis\, FEA validation\, and vibration
characterisation. Ground motion measurements are carried out for the CLIC
stabilisation activities.\nThis seminar will give an overview of the mech
anical measurement techniques used by EN-MME lab. Furthermore the seminar
will focus on the experimental performances of the new system developed to
measure simultaneously the strain and capacitive gauges. The dynamic stre
ss measurements will also be discussed with an example of failure analysis
.\n\nMichael Guinchard graduated DUT Mesures Physiques in 1996 from the St
rasbourg University of Technology. He worked for General Motors in the Noi
se and Vibration Laboratory of the European Technical Centre during 6 year
s and followed in parallel courses in instrumentation – measurements wit
h the CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers). He is in charge
of the Mechanical Measurements Lab since 2005.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/co
