DESCRIPTION:With the increasing capabilities of microelectronic technology
\, future particle detectors will be able to yield high level features tha
t are not only simple geometrical positions or energy measurements in the
sensors used. The ability to compute such high level primitives in near re
al-time is what we characterize as “intelligence”.\nThis will enable t
he construction of detectors with novel functionalities\, allowing the tri
gger logic or even the off-line analysis in experiments to handle immediat
ely more complex features of the measurements. Two examples of new primiti
ves are near real-time charged particle direction or charge clusters witho
ut pixel boundary effects. But the addition of such intelligence has pract
ical challenges and in particular system issues must be addressed\, such a
s material budget and power density.\nThis Workshop would provide a discus
sion forum for the community of scientists and engineers working on develo
pment of intelligent devices.\nThe objectives of the workshop will be to e
nhance the cross breeding of ideas\, to compare concepts for incorporating
intelligence in particle trackers\, and to explore possibilities for appl
ication to other areas.\nThe format of the workshop is on plenary sessions
\, for a duration of 2.5 days.\nThis Workshop is the second of the series.
The first one was held in Berkeley in 2010.\n\nRegistration for the work
shop will be by invitation following review of abstracts.\n\nThe abstract
submission deadline is January 14\, 2012.\n\nProceedings of the workshop w
ill be published in JINST.\n\nDeadline extended to January 28\, 2012.\n\nW
e invite submission of abstracts in the following subjects:\n*Applications
of intelligent detectors\n*Coupled layer and monolithic architectures\n*D
evelopment of specific components\n*Electronic circuits (3D and convention
 al) on- and off-detector\n*High speed communication\n*System integration\n
 *Real time pattern recognition\n*Advanced Algorithms\n\nhttp://indico.cern
