The COMPASS Collaboration is currently preparing a proposal for future studies of nucleon structure beyond 2011. A major focus of this programme will be the investigation of the transverse spatial structure of the nucleon ('nucleon tomography') as described by 'generalized parton distributions' (GPDs). The unique high-energy, highly polarized CERN muon beam together with the COMPASS spectrometer give access to the intermediate region between the gluon-dominated small-x_Bjorken region measured at HERA and the valence-quark-dominated large-x_Bjorken region accessed at HERMES and JLAB. COMPASS will study this transition region using Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off unpolarized and polarized targets. The workshop "GPDs@COMPASS" will be held at CERN bringing together theoreticians and experimentalists. Its main purpose is to better define the key measurements for studies of GPDs.
