DESCRIPTION:Speakers: OKADA\, Kensuke (Riken / BNL)\nTo study the proton s
pin structure\, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider\n(RHIC) at BNL provide
s a unique opportunity by colliding polarized protons.\nThe hard subproces
ses in proton-proton collisions involve gluons in\nleading order\, therefo
re measurements of cross section asymmetries\nbetween aligned and anti ali
gned proton helicities give us information\nabout the spin dependent gluon
distribution\, which might hold the\nlongstanding missing proton spin com
ponent.\nFor the longitudinal spin program\, the PHENIX experiment accumul
 ated\nabout 10/pb of data at sqrt(s)=200GeV with roughly 60% proton beam\n
polarization and 0.1/pb of data at sqrt(s)=62GeV with 50% polarization.\nU
p until now\, we have performed spin asymmetry measurements\nfocusing on p
i0 production with the central electromagnetic\ncalorimeters. Despite low
integrated luminosity\, it was shown that\nthe sqrt(s)=62GeV data have com
parable sensitivity to the gluon\npolarization through the high x_T=2p_T/s
qrt(s) region.\nIn addition\, various channels such as partial jets\, char
ged pions\, direct\nphotons in the central rapidity region\, large rapidit
 y J/psi's through the\nmuon channel and pi0's in a newly installed large r
apidity electromagnetic\ncalorimeter will provide complementary results.\n
We also measure double helicity asymmetries of the average intrinsic k_T\n
by 2-particle correlations\,which may be sensitive to the partonic orbital
\nangular momentum\, another possible contribution to the proton spin.\nIn
this talk\, we report recent results and plans of the PHENIX\nlongitudina
 l spin program.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.ch/contributionDisplay.py?contribId=
