DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Mr. DEMAR\, Philip (FERMILAB)\nAdvances in wide area
network service offerings\, coupled with comparable developments\nin loca
l area network technology have enabled many HEP sites to keep their offsit
e\nnetwork bandwidth ahead of demand. For most sites\, the more difficult
and costly\naspect of increasing wide area network capacity is the local
loop\, which connects the\nfacility LAN to the wide area service provider(
s). Fermilab has chosen to provide\nits own local loop access through le
asing of dark fiber to a nearby network exchange\npoint (StarLight)\, and
procuring dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) equipment to\nprovide da
ta channels across the fiber. Installing and managing such optical networ
k\ninfrastructure has broadened the Laboratory’s network support respons
ibilities to\ninclude operating network equipment that is located off-site
\, and is technically much\ndifferent than classic LAN network equipment.
Effectively\, the Laboratory has\nassumed the role of a local service pro
vider. \n\nThis presentation will cover Fermilab’s experiences with dep
loying and supporting a\nMetropolitan Area Network (MAN) infrastructure\,
based on metro-range DWDM equipment\,\nin order to meet its offsite networ
king needs. The benefits and drawbacks of\nproviding and supporting such a
service will be discussed. Issues of scalability\,\ncomplexity\, monito
ring\, and troubleshooting will also be discussed.\n\nhttp://indico.cern.c
