DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr. RIBON\, Alberto (CERN)\nGeant4 is a general purp
ose toolkit for simulating the tracking\n and interaction of particles thr
ough matter. It is currently used\n in production in several particle phys
 ics experiments (BaBar\, HARP\, \n ATLAS\, CMS\, LHCb)\, and it has also a
pplications in other areas\, \n as space science\, medical applications\,
and radiation studies.\n The complexity of the Geant4 code requires carefu
l testing of all \n of its components\, especially before major releases (
 which happens\n twice a year\, in June and December).\n In this talk\, I w
ill describe the recent development of an automatic\n suite for testing ha
dronic physics in high energy calorimetry \n applications. The idea is to
use a simplified set of hadronic \n calorimeters\, with different beam par
ticle types\, and various beam \n energies\, and comparing relevant observ
ables between a given \n reference version of Geant4 and the new candidate
one. Only those \n distributions that are statistically incompatible are
then printed \n out and finally inspected by a person to look for possible
bugs. \n The suite is made of Python scripts\, and utilizes the "Statisti
cal \n Toolkit" for the statistical tests between pair of distributions\,
\n and runs on the Grid to cope with the large amount of CPU needed \n in
a short period of time. In fact\, the total CPU time required for \n each
of these Geant4 release validation productions amounts to about\n 4 CPU-ye
ars\, which have to be concentrated in a couple of weeks. \n Therefore\, t
he Grid environment is the natural candidate to perform \n this validation
production. We have already run three of them\, \n starting in December 2
 004. In the last production\, in December 2005\, \n we run as Geant4 VO\,
for the first time\, demonstrating the full \n involvement of Geant4 insid
e the EGEE communities. Several EGEE sites \n have provided us with the ne
eded CPU\, and this has guaranteed the \n success of the production\, arri
ving to an overall efficiency rate \n of about 99%.\n In the talk\, emphas
is will be given on our experiences in using \n the Grid\, the results we
got from it and possible future \n improvements. Technical aspects of the
Grid framework that have\n been deployed for the production will only be m
entioned\; for more \n details see the talks of P.Mendez and J.Moscicki.\n
