DESCRIPTION:Speakers: SHIPSEY\, Frances (London School of Economics and Po
litical Science)\nAn academic research paper evolves through various stage
s during its lifecycle\, for\nexample from early conference presentation t
hrough working paper to final published\nrefereed journal article. Differ
ent versions can co-exist in publicly available\nelectronic form. Finding
out researchers’ attitudes towards storing\, labelling and\nmaking acce
ssible these different versions\, both of their own and of their peers’\
nwork is at the heart of the VERSIONS Project\, funded by the JISC under t
he Digital\nRepositories Programme. \n\nThe project addresses the issues
and uncertainties relating to versions of academic\npapers in digital repo
sitories. By including a user requirements study\, the project\nwill clar
ify the needs of researchers and other stakeholders for deposit\, storage
and \naccessibility of different versions in the lifecycle of a digital re
source. In\naddition to looking at user needs\, the project will analyse
researchers’ current\npractice in terms of retention of author copies of
their own material. This\ninvestigation into current practice will revea
l the extent of available suitable\nversions for deposit in digital reposi
tories.\n\nThe user requirements study and the investigation into current
practice will feed\ninto a third strand of project activity which will dev
elop a toolkit of guidelines\nand will propose standards on versions. Thi
s activity will be carried out in\ncoordination with the JISC and working
with relevant metadata standards\, publishing \nand OAI communities.\n\nTh
e project has a focus on eprints in the subject discipline of economics an
d takes a\ncomparative view by drawing on established partnerships and exp
erience with European\nlibraries specialising in economics.\n\nhttp://indi
