Simulation studies for the Phase 1 upgrade of the CMS pixel detector

Towards the end of 2009 the first collisions are expected to take place at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. After about four years of operation, the accelerator will be upgraded to the so-called Phase 1: a peak luminosity of 2x10^34 cm^(-2)s^(-1) is expected, resulting in an increase by a factor of two with respect to the initial specifications. In this occasion, the CMS pixel detector will be replaced with an upgraded system, with major changes to the mechanical structure, front-end electronics and the cooling system. In this presentation I discuss the performance of the pixel detector and track reconstruction with the new layout, based on Monte Carlo simulations.
