Transport and Accommodation

TRAVEL

We recommend that travel by air is best when flying direct from point of origin to North East England. However, if you are staying over in London, travelling from the centre of London is easiest by train.

ARRIVAL BY AIR VIA NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (airport code:NCL)
Newcastle airport is approximately 20 miles north of Durham.  There are connecting flights from a number of European hubs including London Heathrow & Gatwick, Amsterdam, Paris and Brussels, and the airport is also served by a number of budget airlines.
To reach Durham you have two options:
(a) Taxi: A taxi from Newcastle airport could cost approximately £50 one way.  The journey will take approximately 40 minutes, longer in rush hour traffic.
Airport Taxis is the official taxi service for Newcastle International Airport.  Payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card. Taxis are available in the rank outside the terminal building, but can also be pre-booked. To make a booking or for further information please contact:
Tel:     +44 (0) 191 214 6969 Web:   www.airport-taxis.co.uk
(b) Public transport: The Metro and train public transport system is available from the airport to Durham, as follows:
  • The terminal building is linked by a covered walkway directly into the Metro. (You will need coins for the ticket machines, which can be obtained in the main building).
  • Take the Metro to Central Station (the main train station in Newcastle), journey takes approximately 20 minutes and Metro trains run every 7 minutes.
  • There is a regular day time train service from Newcastle to Durham, with journey times as short as 12 minutes. You can book your tickets here: www.nationalrail.co.uk
Our recommendation: If you are arriving at the airport in the evening it is our recommendation that you take a taxi from the airport.

ARRIVAL BY AIR VIA DURHAM TEES VALLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (airport code: MME)
Durham Tees Valley airport is approximately 25 miles south of Durham.  Although it has fewer flights than Newcastle, there are connecting flights with London Heathrow & Gatwick, Amsterdam and other cities, and again it is served by budget airlines.
To reach Durham, again you have two options:
  1. A taxi should take approximately 50 minutes under normal traffic conditions and it should cost approximately £50, one way.
  2. The Tees Valley Sky Express (737) bus service running between the airport and Darlington train station.  This service runs every 60 minutes between 07.35 hrs (09.35 on a Sunday) and 22.55 hrs, and is free for air travellers.  The journey time is 27 minutes.  Full details of the timetable can be viewed at www.skyexpress.co.uk   From Darlington train station, you can take most trains heading northbound, check that Durham is the first stop.
ARRIVAL BY (AIR THEN) TRAIN VIA LONDON KINGS CROSS
From Heathrow airport travel into central London to Kings Cross station. Take the Underground all the way from Heathrow to Kings Cross station on the Piccadilly (dark blue) line.  From Gatwick Airport (www.gatwickairport.com), we would recommend that you take the Gatwick Express train to Victoria station in central London (approximately 30 minutes).  Travel on to Kings Cross station on the Underground train on the Victoria (pale blue) line.

There is a regular service from London Kings Cross to Durham; the journey time is approximately 3 hours. The following website is useful for booking tickets http://www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/ Tickets purchased well in advance will usually be much cheaper than tickets purchased near or on the day of travel.
