Description
By forming appropriate combinations of nuclear masses, essentially second or third order differences, one may suppress drastically smooth terms in the nuclear mass surface and isolate effects of interest, e.g. nuclear shells, pairing terms or potential alpha correlations. A general procedure for forming these mass relations will be introduced and discussed. Examples using the recent mass tabulations will be given, and a new procedure for extrapolating mass into new regions will be introduced.
