Minutes (written by A. Ribon) of the LCG Generator Services planning meeting on 29 May 2009. ------------ People attending in room 32-1-A24: - Gabriele Cosmo (GCO) - Gloria Corti (GC) - Lev Dudko (LD) - Alberto Ribon (AR) - Lars Sonnenschein (LS) People attending remotely via EVO or telephone: - Andy Buckley (AB) - David Grellscheid (DG) - Osamu Jinnouchi (OJ) - Judith Katzy (JK) - Leif Lonnblad (LL) - Torbjorn Sjostrand (TS) ===================================================================== AR presented the status of the ongoing activities in the LCG Generator Services subproject since the last planning meeting (28 November 2008), and the plan of work for the next 6 months. Comments to the slides ====================== The main proposal for the next 6 months (see slide #10), i.e. to build all new versions in GENSER with autotools only, has been approved. We report below the few questions and comments on this subject. 1) DG commented that autotools have another major advantage (besides portability in most platforms): they allow more easily the packaging and distribution of code via standard Linux tool like rpm and yum . This is not necessarily a task for GENSER, but it allows interested people to eventually work on it. 2) GC asked confirmation that the Mac OS X platform will be supported (besides Window, for selected generators), as required by LHCb (see slide #6, third (last) point). AR agreed and emphasized that this is one of the benefit of adopting autotools. AB (via email after the meeting) reminded that autotools doesn't always do everything right for Mac OS (particular attention should be paid to the linker option flags), but he would expect that for the Fortran generators it'll be fine. 3) JK asked whether with autotools will be still possible to build a single version of a generator, without anything else. GC also asked whether the libraries in GENSER will be distributed on AFS in exactly the same way as now. AR replied positively, commenting that the goal is that users should not be affected at all by the transition from the current building system to the new one based on autotools.
