Transportation

Khon Kaen can be easily reached by air, train, and bus. Most likely you will arrive via Bangkok. The distance is about 450 km, and the air-con bus takes about 6 – 7 hours. There are also trains, but the travel time is about 8 hours. A guide book or the websites ought to be consulted.

The easiest transfer to Khon Kaen is by air, about 1 hour. There are 3 companies flying into Khon Kaen airport (KKC): Thai Smile, Air Asia, and Nok Air.

Thai Airways (TG)(1) offers flights to Khon Kaen, but they are operated by Thai Smile(2). All flights are domestic only. There is no Immigration and Customs at the Khon Kaen airport. This means you can’t check your luggage through. Most flights come from the Bangkok domestic airport Don Muang (DMK). Only Thai Smile has flights from the international airport Suvarnabhumi (BKK).

This might be the most convenient way to reach Khon Kaen, but leave sufficient time for connections. You must clear Immigration and Customs before checking your luggage back in two floors up (Thai Smile counter on the 4th floor). There might be a long line at immigration.

If your flight leaves from Don Muang, you must cross town (about 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on traffic). There is a shuttle bus, free of charge if you have an ongoing flight.

If you want to stay in Bangkok and continue later, there is a convenient and fast train terminal in the airport (B1 floor). If you want to take a taxi downtown, you will be offered the Tourist Taxi at a high rate. It might be advisable to go to 1st floor and take a public metered taxi. It is much cheaper, although you pay additionally the highway tolls (75 Baht) and a fee for the driver (50 Baht).

If a visa is required for your country of origin, you might need a letter of invitation from the conference. Please let us know. Check the immigration rules with the Thai Embassy. For most countries you might enter as a tourist for up to 15 or 30 days, depending on the country. For some countries, there is ‘Visa on Arrival’ next to the Immigration at BKK airport. Mind the length of stay! Immigration takes ‘overstaying’ very serious, and there are hefty fines.

From Khon Kaen airport or bus terminal the hotel can be easily be reached by Taxi or Tuk-Tuk.
