Description

Objective: First brainstorming and attempt to get relevant experts together benefiting from the medical CAS lecturers expertise

Short introduction to EPITA project and to Task 3.3 (Roadmap for societal applications of accelerators) followed by brainstorming on:

  • Relevant subjects for a roadmap for particle accelerators and more broadly accelerators' technology development for medical applications;
  • Ideas on how to best reach the communities - FLASH, SFRT, VHEE, ENLIGHT, PTCOG, Theranostics - and to assess their present status and future needs.
    • 17:45 18:00
      Introduction 15m
      Speaker: Alberto Degiovanni (CERN)
    • 18:00 19:00
      Brainstorming session 1h

Present: AD, MV, TT, AG, MP, EB, MV, YP

We covered mainly the first point with lively exchange and gathered arguments on three main areas:

      1.       Cost effectiveness

      -          cure tumours that are not treated with Radiation Therapy (RT) and “push from palliative care to curative care” by increasing the cost effectiveness of radiation therapy.

      -          Think at the full workflow and highlight the fact that efficiency of treatments and improvements in new modalities (and also in photons RT) should not be prevented by initial implementation cost, but more focus on cost savings on the long-term effects.

à Explore links with health economics

      2.       Accessibility and capacity increase for pre-clinical radiobiology experimental studies

      -          Dealing with national ethics regulations is complex and time-consuming process. Several groups would go through the same process.

à proposal for “hubs” as service for the radiobiology experimental communities?

à those hubs can form a network where the developments (typically complementary) from different labs and groups can be

      3.       Technology demonstrators and incremental improvements

      -          Technology development needed to cover new modalities.

      -          Possibilities of concept demonstration on small scale for Small Animals Radiation Platforms (SARP)

à Explore the possibility of prototypes that can be used to treat veterinary patients (cats, dogs)

à movable irradiation stations (« campervan labs » or moveable labs?)
