Description

Abstract:

Please note that the we kindly ask you when connecting to this seminar to mute your microphones and cameras in order to have a good connection.

Optical fibre sensors based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology are used to monitor the mechanical behaviour of superconducting magnets during the assembly process at room temperature, cool down and powering phases at cryogenic temperatures. Prior to magnet installation, the development of this instrumentation required several years of R&D effort to validate the trueness and the accuracy of optical measurements in cryogenic conditions.

A description of the instrumentation used to monitor strain profile of superconducting magnets will be presented during the seminar including the validation tests done on both techniques (electrical and optical). Main results obtained on MQXF structures will be presented with a focus on short models with mirror instrumentation. In addition, other applications in the accelerator field and developments ongoing in the EN-MME mechanical measurement lab will be presented.
