Description
We review recent developments in string theory compactification with an emphasis on particle physics implications. We focus on extended objects - Dirichlet branes - and highlight an important geometric role that these objects play in deriving particle physics from string theory, both at the perturbative and non non-pertrubative level. We highlight recent advances in F-theory compactification, a geometric description of string theory with Dirichlet branes at a finite string coupling.
