Abstract: I will cover some of the basics of calculating expected dark
matter rates, the main technologies currently in use and why it is
difficult to do. I will also talk a little bit about the sociology of
the field, which is particularly interesting now given the several
claims, hints, excesses and null results that have been reported in the
last few years.
