Description
I discuss classical and quantum features of higher-derivative scalar theories appearing in phenomenology and cosmology (classicalons, Galileons). The classical features include classicalization, brane annihilation and the Vainshtein mechanism. The consistency of the theories under quantum corrections is examined. A particular application concerns the renormalization of theories that describe membranes and the connection with the scenario of asymptotic safety in gravity.
