For ions collisions in LHC, a luminosity of 1027 cm-2s-1/experiment is needed. The actual injector chain used for SPS is at least a factor 30 too low in intensity for LHC. The LEIR machine where ions are accumulated, cooled and accelerated restore this missing factor. The overall chain of accelerator and processes involved will be presented with a particular emphasis on LEIR.
