Description

Several experiments are moving from a more traditional separation of on- and offline to a combined concept, nicknamed "streaming DAQs". Niko will introduce the motivation, technique and technologies used. Thorsten will present some of the challenges. A panel will discuss the consequences for instance for analysis, the open questions, and the ingredients that still need to be understood. We, the audience, should try to challenge them with questions and criticism!

Online computing for realtime reconstruction & analysis 20m

Beginning with Run2 LHCb is doing a lot of data-processing previously done off-line quasi synchronously with the data-acquisition. The data obtained this way are of such a quality that they can and have been successfully used to directly produce publications from them. I will briefly review the hardware and software infrastructure which has made this possible in Run2 and then talk about the new challenges for Run 3.

      Speaker: Niko Neufeld (CERN)

From today's HLTs to Streaming DAQs and Online Reconstruction: challenges and limits 20m

Over the last 2 decades software triggers (HLTs) have been used more and more extensively in HEP and HENP experiments. Software triggers and online reconstruction will play a crucial role in the LHC LS2 detector upgrades and the FAIR experiments. The challenges and limits encountered in today's ALICE HLT and yesterday's STAR L3 will be briefly reviewed and how they influenced the design of the ALICE O2 system for Run 3.

Speaker: Thorsten Kollegger (GSI - Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH (DE))
