ABSTRACT

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) is Europe’s leading grid computing project, providing a computing support infrastructure for over 10,000 researchers world-wide, from fields as diverse as high energy physics, earth, life sciences, astronomy and astrophysics, computational chemistry, fusion, etc.

In 2009 EGEE is focused on transitioning to a sustainable operational model, while maintaining reliable services for its users. The resources currently coordinated by EGEE will be managed through the European Grid Initiative (EGI) as of 2010. In EGI each country's grid infrastructure will be run by National Grid Initiatives. The adoption of this model will enable the next leap forward in research infrastructures to support collaborative scientific discoveries. EGI will ensure abundant, high-quality computing support for the European and global research community for many years to come.

The course introduces the structural concepts of the EGEE Grid and details its gLite middleware from the Grid application developers’ point of view. The focus of the course is on how to create and manage functional parallel “workflow” applications on the EGEE Grid. Workflows are one of the most popular applications on Grids, although they require the integration of several services and assume complex knowledge from the developer. The latest release of gLite includes command line support to create and manage workflow applications, however this facility is too complex for many potential user of the infrastructure. P-GRADE Grid Portal extends the gLite middleware to simplify the work of Grid application developers. P-GRADE provides graphical tools to define, execute and monitor grid workflows and workflow based parameter studies. P GRADE Portal is an open source software that is used by various user communities of several gLite and Globus based grid systems.

Attendees of the course will understand the structure of the gLite middleware, gLite and P-GRADE implementation of workflows and will see how to define and execute such applications on EGEE with P GRADE Portal. Real life examples from various application domains will be used through the course to demonstrate the power of the presented approaches.

PREREQUISITES

The course assumes that attendees are familiar with the basic concepts of Grid computing, but it does not require the knowledge of either EGEE, gLite P-GRADE Portal, or any Grid programming language.
