Description

The RILIS (Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source) is the most commonly used ion source at ISOLDE. The scope of this talk will be to summarize recent developments, concerning new laser ionization schemes and developments towards a new mode of high-resolution spectroscopy. The new spectroscopy approach, which is currently under way, uses two-photon transitions, allowing Doppler-free spectroscopy of the elements of interest. This method does not only provide the means to further develop the RILIS as a spectroscopy experiment but will also open up new possibilities of ion beam production for elements with high ionization potentials that can so far only be ionized with a plasma ion source.
