Description

For this talk, we will meet Professor Sijbrand de Jong, CERN Council president., who will be interviewed by Sima Baymani, member of the WIT Steering Committee. We will start at 12h00, have a 30-40 min interview and finish with 10-15 minutes of open mic for questions from the audience. Afterwards, for those that can, we will enjoy lunch together in Restaurant 2.

The WIT Diversity talks interview senior male colleagues around their experiences and thoughts on gender diversity and gender balance, and why this has been important to them both professionally and personally.

The purpose is to raise awareness and provide role models on how one as a (male) ally can participate in progressing the issue.

The WIT Diversity Talks are a complement to the WIT Talks, as the former somehow turn the tables with regards to the latter: in the WIT Talks, women are interviewed around their careers, acting as role models in that sense. With the WIT Diversity Talks, the focus would be to talk about personal experiences on diversity and provide male role models to show that this is also a question for men. Normally interviews like this are the other way around, men about career and women about diversity!

About Sijbrand de Jong

Professor de Jong received his doctorate in 1990 from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands for his contribution to the design of a novel multiprocessor system for the ZEUS calorimeter trigger at Germany’s DESY laboratory. Following his doctorate, he became a Fellow at CERN, where he worked on the OPAL detector at the Laboratory’s LEP accelerator until the late 1990s. He then moved to Fermilab in the US where he was deeply involved in the hunt for the Higgs boson at the Tevatron. De Jong is currently active in astroparticle physics, participating in cosmic ray research at the Pierre Auger Observatory. Since 2010 he has been a delegate to the CERN Council and since 2016 the CERN Council president. Professor de Jong has been a staff Member at Nikhef and has taught introductory and advanced high-energy physics courses at Radboud University Nijmegen. He is Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

Already in the beginning of his mandate as Council president, he shared his thoughts on gender diversity in a well written piece on the CERN blog, which sparked our interest to interview him in this matter. Come along to hear more about breaking stereotypes, quotas and parenting!
