During my nearly 50 years in computing I had the great fortune to work with many fascinating projects and people. Some are well known, such as Unix at Berkeley and Bell Labs; some are unknown, such as the Syntrex Distributed Operating System; and several are in the middle. I will recount personal experiences with the people and technology, then end with some lessons learned over the years.
About the speaker
Charles B. Haley is currently retired. His last position was lecturer in the Department of Computing at the Open University. Before reentering the academic community in 1999, he worked for 25 years in the software industry at companies including Bell Laboratories, Rational Software, Bell Northern Research, and Sun Microsystems, holding positions ranging from software engineer to director of development. During the 1970s he was a research assistant at the University of California at Berkeley when the Computer Science Department transitioned to using Unix. He has a PhD from the Open University and an MS and BA from the University of California at Berkeley. See http://charles.the-haleys.org/
