Description

Abstract : The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is one of  the two multi-purpose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and  has a broad physics program. Many aspects of this program depend on the ability to detect, reconstruct and identify events with final state electrons and photons with excellent efficiency and high energy resolution. In this seminar the full process of CMS electron and photon reconstruction, that combines information from the electromagnetic calorimeter and the tracking detector, is presented. The method to achieve the ultimate  precision in Run 2 energy measurements is described, together with the identification strategies used to discriminate electrons and photons produced in interesting physics processes, from those created in background events.  Finally, the prospects for the upcoming Run 3 are also shown, focusing in particular on the reoptimization of the electromagnetic object identification, necessitated by the harsher environment with respect to Run 2.
