Description

The Early Career Scientists Fora of the four large LHC experiments have joined forces to organise a cycle of soft skills workshops, where each event will focus on a different career development training aspect (CV writing, grant writing, the importance of networking, career paths, negotiations for a new job, interview preparation, etc.).

The fifth of these workshops will take place on Friday 4th June and will be dedicated to "Personal statement and research proposal writing".

A pre-recorded introductory talk by Marielle Chartier is now available to all registrants, at the bottom-right hand corner of this Indico tab. We recommend that those who have registered watch the talk before the start of your session. We have also provided the slides for your convenience.

It is advised to watch this talk before the time of the event

There will be 2 sessions of the workshop at different times. Each session will have different panellists but with the same structure to accommodate participants from different time zones:

  • Session 1 (10:00-11:30 CEST):

    • Marielle Chartier –  Team Leader at the University of Liverpool and ALICE Collaboration Board Deputy Chair (ALICE)

    • Raphael Granier de Casagnac – Researcher at CNRS and member of the CMS Career Committee (CMS)

    • Xiaohu Sun – Professor at Peking University (CMS)

  • Session 2 (17:00-18:30 CEST):

    • Deepak Kar – Associate Professor at the University of Witwatersrand (ATLAS)

    • Vava Gligorov – Particle physicist at LPNHE (LHCb)

    • James Hirschauer – Scientist at Fermilab (CMS)

Please also feel free take a look at an overview of our panelists.

Given the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the event is going to be online only.

During the workshop, sections of example personal statements and research proposals will be assessed by experts who will advise on how they can be improved. If you would like to submit a personal statement or research proposal, please upload this by 21st May. Please note that, due to time constraints, not all personal statements and research proposals submitted will be assessed.

This will be followed by an open question panel discussion.

To attend this workshop, please register via the Indico page here: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1034518/registrations/72740/

During registration, you will have the opportunity to submit questions that you would like to be addressed by our panellists during the round table discussion. Please make use of this opportunity to help us shape the event according to your needs.

The event is open to anyone working on a CERN experiment.
