Description

Abstract
The EPFL Center for Intelligent Systems brings together researchers working on various aspects of creating intelligent systems. The fundamental research and its applications cross the boundaries of schools at EPFL and create opportunities for direct interactions with Swiss industry.

The Center for Intelligent Systems (CIS) at EPFL, a joint initiative of the schools ENAC, IC, SB, STI and SV seeks to advance research and practice in the strategic field of intelligent systems. Such systems are embedded with elements of artificial intelligence and are emerging in response to the convergence of the virtual and physical worlds through the development of autonomous systems, wearable technologies, robotic co-workers, smart devices, drone technology, augmented reality, intelligent houses, digital twins, intelligent manufacturing, and many other applications.

When available, such technologies will have profound implications for many areas including manufacturing, transportation, commerce, employment, healthcare, government, legal, security, privacy, and education.

CIS Goals
• To bring people together within EPFL under the umbrella of Intelligent Systems (ML/AI, robotics, Computer Vision)
• To encourage ambitious collaborative projects to build Intelligent Systems
• To act as the point of contact and collaboration for Swiss industry

There is a lot of overlap between EPFL and CERN Research and scope for collaboration between the CIS Researchers and CERN Researchers with mutual benefits. CIS aim is to liaise and collaborate with Swiss and international Industry, a similar goal to that of CERN Knowledge Transfer whose mission is to diffuse technology and expertise from CERN to it Member States, Switzerland being a host state. CIS further supports education and training at EPFL and strives to proactively promote the creation of start-ups.

Furthermore, CIS is hosting then EPFL ELLIS Unit (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) and is an active member of the the Eurotech University Alliance. Both structures amplify EPFL’s reach on AI and provide access to talent on a European level. The ELLIS Unit and the collaboration with the Eurotech University Alliance are also creating unique opportunities for cross organisation collaborations and involvement of European Industry or Universities in inspiring projects.

Intention of the talk:  with my talk I will provide an overview of the EPFL Center for Intelligent Systems with the intention to explore synergies with CERN. I am happy to share insights and lessons learned of the building up of the center.

Due to unforeseen reasons, this event is only open to CERN people. Please accept our apologies and we hope you’ll attend future seminars.

Please attend in person if you can, alternatively you can use zoom for this seminar. (CERN SSO only)
