Overview of Radiation Effects on Electronics and Impact on CERN Particle Accelerator Activities

Abstract:

One of the main threats to the operation of CERN's accelerators is the effects of radiation on electronics. Generated by the particle accelerators themselves, they can lead to the failure of critical control systems. A wide range of knowledge, activities, tools and techniques are needed to ensure the reliability of the radiation qualification process. The unique radiation environments generated have required many years of research to develop dedicated qualification strategies that are now part of CERN's Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA). In this talk, an overview of the radiation effects and their consequences will be presented, as well as the different challenges encountered during the qualification process and the different techniques implemented to address them.
