Description

The Planck satellite has been gathering data flawlessly and continuously for over eighteen months and is now close to completing its third consecutive full sky survey. The first data products are in the public domain since January 11 in the form of a catalogue of more than 10000 compact sources in the band 30-857 GHz. This catalogue, the first of its kind in the frequency range explored, is remarkably broad as it comprises a variety of different types of sources, from nearby objects in the Galaxy to various classes of radio galaxies and dusty galaxies and to distant clusters of galaxies. I will highlight the most prominent results from this early science release. I will also discuss the design, performances and motivations of the mission, whose much awaited cosmological results will probe the conditions of the early Universe at energy scales inconceivable for terrestrial experiments. Primordial gravitational waves, the inflationary phase and physics beyond the standard model are all targets on Planck's list.
