Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a private research university in Troy, New York, with additional campuses in Hartford and Groton, Connecticut. It was established in 1824 by Stephen van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton for the "application of science to the common purposes of life" and is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world. Numerous American colleges or departments of applied sciences were modeled after Rensselaer. Built on a hillside, RPI's 265-acre campus overlooks the city of Troy and the Hudson River and is a blend of traditional and modern architecture. The institute operates an oncampus business incubator and the 1,250-acre Rensselaer Technology Park.

September is the ideal time to visit, with pleasant temperatures and an opportunity to enjoy the many magnificent sites in and around Troy. For the outdoorsperson, the Adirondack, Catskill, and Berkshire mountains neighbor closely along with many pristine rivers and lakes. Nestled in the Adirondacks is Lake George, the “Queen of the American Lakes” known for its water clarity and scenic beauty. Downtown Troy and the neighboring cities of Albany and Saratoga Springs are cultural hubs with fantastic food and attractions that define the upstate New York region.  Troy, home of the famous Uncle Sam, has beautiful 19th century architecture, as a result of its industrial importance since that time. As such, New Yorkers have enjoyed coming "upstate" to Troy and the Capital Region for more than a century.
