Minutes of the meeting between TE-MPE and SY-ABT on BISv2 new developments

BIS v2 new developments and impact of new actuator board (CIBAB) on SY-ABT systems 

TE-MPE proposes to standardize the interface between the BIS and its actuators (LBDS, SBDS, MKI, MKP, PC, LINAC4 CHOPPER, etc) in the entire CERN complex. The baseline of the BIS v2 project includes the development of such an interface board, the so-called CIBAB, that will be ready for LS3. The CIBAB will provide the following:

• Common decoding algorithm for the detection of the Beam Permit frequencies (i.e., goal is to avoid different implementations and detection criteria across different groups and machines)
• Common hardware interface with the actuators (i.e., via VME P2 or front panel LEMO)
• Redundant implementation to ensure the required level of dependability (i.e., independent CIBAB boards to decode A and B channels)
• Enhanced diagnostics: each CIBAB board will be accessible via FESA and will provide full monitoring of the Beam Permit Loops (i.e., Beam Permit status, History Buffer and SFP diagnostics)
• Easy maintenance of the optical loop infrastructure (e.g., no longer need for TE-MPE to disconnect optical fibres on SY-ABT equipment to perform optical measurements)

SY-ABT notes that the interface between the CIBAB and the TSU/FIB is not compatible with the present hardware, therefore a new design of the TSU/FIB boards would be required. At present, SY-ABT does not foresee to develop new TSU/FIB boards for LS3. Nevertheless, the proposal from TE-MPE will be taken into consideration and studied. Three options were discussed at the meeting for possible interface in LS3:

• Option 1: SY-ABT would use the CIBAB (via VME P2) as an interface between the Beam Permit Loops and the TSU/FIB. This option would be the preferred one for TE-MPE as it is considered the best in terms of reliability and maintainability. As mentioned above, this would require a new design of the TSU/FIB.
• Option 2: SY-ABT would not use the CIBAB. In this case, the TSU/FIB would receive the Beam Permit Frequencies via the CIBSFP mezzanine board (https://edms.cern.ch/item/EDA-03463-V2-0/0). Note that this interface is already tested in the LHC SFP testbed. This option would not require any hardware modification on the TSU/FIB, just a firmware upgrade. 
• Option 3: SY-ABT would use the CIBAB (via the front panel LEMO) as an interface between the Beam Permit Loops and the TSU/FIB. This solution would require the development of a new mezzanine board (replacing the CIBO) to interface the LEMO cables from the CIBAB. In addition, the firmware would need to be updated. This option is considered the least dependable for TE-MPE, as it requires external cables from CIBAB to the TSU/FIB.

ACTION for SY-ABT: evaluate the three proposed options and come back to TE-MPE with the preferred solution to be implemented in LS3
