Elaboration and experimental verification of a scaling law for REBCO coated conductors based on the physics of pinning.

Nowadays, high-temperature superconductors in the form of REBCO-coated conductor tapes have attained excellent performance over all domains of interest for applications. The precise knowledge of the critical current dependence on field, field orientation, and temperature is fundamental for modelling magnets and superconducting devices. Scaling laws constitute an invaluable tool in this context. This presentation starts with a review of past scaling laws for REBCO and continues with a new scaling law, which is based on the physics of pinning. This law covers a wide range of fields (from a few millitesla up to 20 T and beyond) and temperature (from 4.2 K up to the critical temperature). An experimental campaign of tape testing has been conducted to demonstrate the potential of the scaling law, as well as to gather data on recently produced commercial tapes. Both direct critical current and magnetization measurements have been performed. Measured and literature data are used to verify the validity of the proposed law. A formulation that considers the field angular dependence of the critical current is also proposed.
