The complex surface impedance (surface resistance and surface reactance) is the main figure characterizing the behavior of a metallic or superconducting surface in high-frequency electromagnetic fields. In this talk a brief introduction to the surface impedance of normal metals in the “normal” and “anomalous” limits will be first given. The surface impedance of a superconductor, in the low and high magnetic field limits, will be then discussed and compared with that of normal metals. Finally the occurrence of nonlinear terms in the surface impedance in high magnetic fields will be discussed in the light of its possible impact on experiments.
