In a complex system, large volumes of data are continuously monitored or logged for future analysis. Understanding why certain data is important and how it relates to the system's safety or performance can be challenging for stakeholders requiring a holistic perspective. A recent approach that has gained significant attention is the utilization of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs). These indicators are measurable and observable metrics that track the frequency of events, providing insights into the system's performance, safety, and even predicting future outcomes. This seminar aims to provide an introduction to KPIs and SPIs, specifically focusing on how to identify relevant KPIs for the LHC Machine Protection System (MPS). It will also explore how Eliminative Argumentation (EA) and assurance cases, in general, can offer a clear understanding of the necessity of certain data and measurements for the system safety and performance. Additionally, there will be discussions on integrating KPIs and SPIs into a “live” assurance case, ensuring its ongoing relevance and driving continuous improvement.
