From Notebook to Dashboard: Implementing Machine Learning-based Solutions in Energy and Manufacturing

In this seminar, I will present a few successful stories of AI-based solutions we developed at the EPFL-ETHZ Swiss Data Science Center from our collaboration with the private and public sectors. In collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), we developed a model to forecast electricity at the national level and measure the effectiveness of large-scale SFOE energy-saving campaigns. From our collaboration with Swiss manufacturing companies, I will showcase (i) one of the first examples of Reinforcement Learning-based controllers to reduce the energy consumption of a production plant while preserving the product’s quality and (ii) the application of Autencoders for anomaly detection in an industrial heating system. I will discuss the challenges related to the deployment of these models in an operational environment and how the business perceives their contributions.
