Project introduction, acquisition system and control of the instrument, J.Emery

J.Emery presented an overview of the system status on behalf of the full BWS team.

The aim is to achieve 4 operational systems and 4 spares after LS3.

For the next 2 years before LS3 the preferred options is to already move to the Hybrid+. This requires to solve some of the issues this YETS.

After LS3 the plan is to have:

  • the 4 Hybrid+ as operational
  • The new WS system installed over LS3 as spare but could become operational some time after.

For the Hybrid+ to became operations it needs:

  • Solved the issue with B2V2 -> the should finish the preparation of a new spare that will be used to replace this YETS the B2V2.
  • Speed limit and stabilisation -> not a showstopper. Requested to check in the laboratory with more cycles.
  • Other non showstopper limits on the slide.

Regarding the electronics, Jonathan mentioned the limitation on the FPGA. Thibaut comments that a pre-selection of the PMT data could be done to reduce the memory that needs, since it is not foreseen further funding for larger FPGAs on this consolidation.

Regarding the scanner controller, Jonathan comments that even though it is not an option for the present system it is the best performant.

Note that commercial systems do not fit the present integration in the tunnel.

Mechanics and integration: Linear wire scanner CONS (Harry Sullivan)

H.Sullivan analysis the legacy system issues and then presents the new conceptual design.

For the linear motion a flat magnetic coupling design is chosen.

Regarding the position measurement system. They investigate the use of glass (more precise than metal).

Impedance investigation, there is no obvious parameter that can be improved. They are trying different things. Thibaut asked if the volume could be reduced the stroke. William comments that can be further investigated, there is room for improvement but it will not reduce the peak completely. Chiara comments that the best is if the impedance team will give them some feedback.

Comments about suing other material instead of ceramics, like carbon.

Thibaut emphasises that impedance will be the main issue, this needs to be checked carefully. A way to extract the power is needed. And in the design needs to be done assuming the worse case and adding some margins.

Michal says that there is a CST model and that the BI group could then run the simulations to advance faster.

Federico: reminds that the new way of fixing the wires needs to be also tested.

William: MME is reducing personnel and hiring new people, so there will be a learning curve.

Action: For next YETS (25-26) a validation with impedance.

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
