Proton Run 2024
Ion Run 2024
Reminder: Beam time exceeding the limits of 2 weeks PS beam time and 1 week SPS beam time per year need the approval of one of these CERN committees: SPSC, LHCC, DRDC, INTC, RB or IEFC. Consider joining a DRD collaboration, if you require more beam time.
New opening : H8 main user week 36 & 37.
Please contact sps.coordinator@cern.ch if you have a proposal to use this beam time.
Target intensities:
See here or via ASM (accessible from within the CERN network).
Upcoming SPS MDs next weeks :
https://be-dep-ea.web.cern.ch/content/md-planning-north-area
Dedicated SPS MDs - if not anounced differently - are taking place from 8:00 to 18:00
Smooth data taking in all experimental area.
EAR1: 238U(n, g)
EAR2: 88Zr(n, g)
NEAR: Activation measurements
Measurements are profiting of dedicated intense proton beams.
On call phone number: 67500
T09: Some issues with BHZ031 trips at 15 GeV/c operation (852A). On 03.09., a dedicated test on this converter during the PS stop was done. Some parameters have been changed and now the converter is to be monitored.
T10: Good operation.
T11: No user.
Good week. POT above the reference intensity for T8 (~2.5e16 p/w, see plot below). During the day we will update the plot including the CHARM target TID. Target was removed during the beam stop at the beginning of the week. The centering of the T8 beam on the horizontal plane was less good than the previous nine weeks: ~85% for this W35 against >90% in W26-W34.
We are in access today from 9:00. in IRRAD, after the summer weeks where we run mosty the long irradiation experiments, now we have several short one in the pipeline (FOS for ITk, LHCb PicoCal, ALICE FoCal SiPM, CMS HGCAL, etc.). Some of these we are installing today. In CHARM we are exchanging test setups for TE-MPE and SY-EPC. In CHARM we are also testing several types of RFID tags to study their radiation tollerance in the framework of the EU-funded AIDAinnova project.
The RP week (September 18-25) is confirmed and during this period T8 will request a reduced duty-cycle (e.g. we will need less spills than usual, details in the coming weeks). Also the cryogenic run in IRRAD is confirmed from mid-october till the end of the proton run.
Good week over all. First part of the campaign finished using HGCROC read-out. Now switching to CAEN read-out. Should be done with the switch by mid-day.
Successful test with 15 GeV/c proton beam on target and 0.8 s flat top. Beam composition scans taken at 3, 6, 8, and 10 GeV/c. Results are being summarised.
Useful parasitic run, reconfiguring set-up
Visit of winning student teams following our test beam in July 2024.
Setup:
Qualification. Calibration and Characterisation of two detectors built by the student teams
Mostly interested in muon beams at 1, 2, 4.5 and 7 GeV, other beam energies and/or tests with mixed beams if needed and time allows
Safety inspection scheduled for Thursday, September 12th 09:00
On call phone number: 67500

General: Problem with public network (GPN) in the North Area on Monday. At some point the network was completely off, so the beam was stopped for about an hour as nobody was able to take data. This also affected the telephones and terminal computers in the control room.
H2/H4/H6/H8: Good operation.
P42/K12: Good operation.
M2: Good operation. The trips in the MS2 MBPL magnet came back on 03.09. (4 trips). This magnet is planned to be thoroughly checked after the deinstallation tomorrow. Low momenta muons checked down to 40 GeV/c.

Smooth data taking since last meeting. Doing further integration work during beam-down times, e.g. ionisation laser full integration into TDAQ in recent days. We will continue at 1 GeV until the end of our run on 16 September.
(Sorry, can not stay connected as I have to join the TIOC at 1100.)
After some start-up issues we took very successfully a lot of data with two irradiated 150um Micron RD53B quads at 0° and 15° inclination as well as the with a Micron 100um SCC and HPK 150um quad, both ItkPixV1, at 0°. Bias voltages as well as tuning thresholds were varied. ToT studies were conducted. Unfortunately, after changing to 15°C the two V2 showed bad communication which occurred already previously and has to be debugged offline. Measurement with them will be continued during the next test beam. Tuning software was updated improving some errors. Due to issues with the third batch we dismantled already yesterday night and I handed over this morning to ITk strips.
Setup is ongoing. Samples have arrived from IRRAD. We will run with Mimosa and Alpide telescopes, and TimePix as a timing plane.
Testbeam for the next two weeks aiming to test LGAD+ASIC (ALTIROC3, pre-production ALTIROC-A) hybrids non-irradiated and irradiated.
Beam request: pions 120 Gev, 1-2 cm2, intensity ~10k particles/spill
H6A material: TLU, Cold box, Aconite telescope, FEI4, Nitrogen
Expected commissioning in 1 day, ISIEC submitted
The setup consists of three platforms: The Triple GEM tracker, the ETLROC tracker and the Trigger and Diamonds platform.
The ETLROC tracker is the new platform on this test beam. The two others are already from the beggining of the year and already inspected before.
The beam required is: Pions at 180 GeV/c with a beam spot of 10-12 mm RMS for both planes.
The installation is now going on and expected safety inspection scheduled at 16:30
We will be running two setups again this week, with one setup (3 plane telescope) mounted to the AIDA telescope PI stage. This will be used to extract some time reoslution data from new ETROC2+LGAD assemblies with 120 GeV pions.
In addition, the usual 4 plane suitcase style telescope will be placed in H8 along with the PPS team to continue the bias scan of ETROC2+LGAD assemblies with 180 GeV pions.
