Coming to CERN
Complete directions, map and advice can be found at Directions to CERN.
We strongly encourage, and can provide limited financial assistance for, travel by less carbon-intensive modes of transport such as trains. For details, see Bursaries. Where air travel is unavoidable we encourage the use of a GHG emissions calculator to compare the environmental cost of different flight options.
Visas
You are responsible for ensuring that you fulfil the necessary entry requirements for Switzerland, and for France if you intend to stay across the border. A Schengen visa covers both countries, see https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/who-needs-schengen-visa/ for details.
Should you require a letter of invitation for a visa, please indicate this in your registration form.
CERN Access Card
A CERN access card is required to enter the site. If you do not have one, you can request a temporary card valid for the duration of the conference during the registration process.
If you plan to bring a car, you will also need to indicate that you require vehicle access on your registration form.
Accommodation
A list of convenient places to stay near CERN can be found on CERN's list of hotels and apartment-hotels in the local area.
CERN hostel for students
A number of rooms at the CERN Hostel have been blocked for students attending this conference. To book one of these rooms, please email info@sc4rc.org to obtain the booking form.
Please note that those rooms are exclusively for participants (no accompanying persons).
Power outlets in Switzerland
Switzerland uses J-type plugs - you may need to bring an adapter. More information at Switzerland power plugs and sockets.
Health Insurance
In view of the extremely high cost of health care in Geneva, we strongly recommend that all participants ensure that they have health insurance cover valid for Switzerland for the duration of their stay, covering illness and accident. This is a standard requirement for all visitors to CERN, and you must carry proof of insurance with you.
