The upcoming Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for charged-lepton flavor violation by detecting neutrino-less direct conversion of muons into electrons, probing physics beyond the Standard Model. To create the muons for Mu2e, a train of 8 GeV kinetic energy protons pulses are to be bombarded against the production target. The delivery of these proton pulses to the target would be achieved using a third-integer resonant extraction of 1e12 protons circulating in the Delivery Ring. The goal is to extract (or 'spill’) a uniform slice of this circulating proton beam and send to the muon production target. In this seminar, we shall gently introduce some relevant beam physics concepts, give a brief overview of the relevant accelerator sub-systems, and present the non-linear beam physics process that goes into the making of these proton pulses. Time permitting, we shall touch upon the Spill Regulation System that is designed to maintain a uniform intensity of the extracted protons, and other potential challenges that come with the beam delivery to Mu2e.
