Tours

A guided visit to the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) and the TRIGA Research Reactor Mainz offers the BTTB participants an opportunity to see two complementary accelerator- and reactor-based research infrastructures located on the Campus of the Johannes Gutenberg-University.

Note: Participants can only choose between the two options; both tours will be held on Tuesday.

MAMI is a race-track-based electron accelerator based at the Institute for Nuclear Physics that has been operating since 1979. After several expansion phases, it is still used today for precision experiments and irradiation tests. It delivers a DC electron beam with energies up to 1.6 GeV and a beam current of up to 100uA. You can find more information here.

The tour will start at the Helmholtz-Institute Mainz:

The TRIGA reactor is a nuclear reactor, operated by the Department of Nuclear Chemistry, that delivers ultra-cold neutrons that can be used for irradiation tests of detector components. It has been in operation since 1965. This tour is limited to a maximum of 30 people who need to be specially registered beforehand. After the registration deadline ends, you will receive an email with further details. Visitors will see a Cherenkov flash. You can find more information about the facility here.

The tour will start at the Institute for Nuclear Chemistry on Tuesday, the 14th of April at 16:00/4 pm. Participants must bring their passport used for registration.

How to reach the facilities

The closest bus/tram stop (approx 3 min walking distance) to both institutes is "Friedrich-von-Pfeifer-Weg". Bus lines departing from "Mainz Höfchen" take at least 11 min. Realistically, participants should leave from the venue at least 45 min in advance. We do not recommend walking from the venue as it would take at least 40 min.
