Will I get ECTS credits? How does ECTS recognition work?
Some Academy courses are delivered by professors from collaborating universities. Participants will take exams, and a certificate will be awarded to those who pass. Credit recognition (ECTS or equivalent) is not automatic and is not guaranteed: each participant is responsible for discussing recognition with their home university office in charge of credits. Whether credits are recognised depends on the university rules, existing agreements (if any), and the specific study programme followed.
Is accommodation mandatory? Can I opt out if I already live in the area?
For external participants, accommodation and meals are included as part of the Academy package. If you are already based in the Geneva area and do not need accommodation, you may request an exemption. Requests are considered case-by-case and depend on logistics and cohort arrangements.
Are there scholarships, fee waivers, or financial support (including travel support)?
Participants are encouraged to seek support from their home institute/employer where possible. A limited number of fee-support cases may be considered depending on available resources for the cohort. Any support is not guaranteed. Travel costs are responsibility of the participant.
How can I be considered for scholarship/fee support?
If any fee-support scheme is available for 2026, shortlisted candidates will be contacted with instructions during the selection process.
What does the CHF 1,500 participation fee cover? Does it include travel? Does CERN reimburse travel expenses?
The CHF 1,500 fee covers on-site accommodation and meals for the full duration of the Academy for external participants, plus access to teaching materials, labs, and specialised computing/hardware resources. Travel to/from Geneva is not included. CERN does not reimburse travel expenses.
Can I do a 1-2 month placement in a CERN group after the Academy (e.g. for a PhD secondment)? How does it work?
The Academy may offer an optional 1-2 month post-Academy placement with a CERN group for a limited number of participants, subject to host group availability and suitable projects. This opportunity is not guaranteed and is separate from admission to the Academy. If available, matching is based on host group needs and the participant profile, and may consider engagement and performance during the Academy. Details and timelines will be communicated closer to the beginning of the programme.
How many referees do I need?
Two reference contacts are required. One must be your current main supervisor. A second reference can be from a previous internship supervisor, former supervisor, project lead, or another person who can comment on your preparation and ability to commit to an intensive 10-week programme.
Who counts as "current main supervisor"?
If you are a PhD student: your PhD supervisor/advisor. If you are employed (researcher/engineer): your direct line manager/team lead. If you are between positions: the most recent supervisor/manager you worked with; please briefly explain your current status in the application.
Can I list a senior official (department head, principal, CEO) as my referee?
Yes, but only if they can provide a detailed, first-hand reference about your work. Otherwise, please list someone who directly supervised your work.
My university structure does not assign a formal supervisor (e.g. distance-learning). What should I do?
Provide the closest equivalent to a current supervisor (for example: programme director, thesis coordinator, project mentor, or research lead) and briefly explain in your application how supervision is organised in your programme.
How are references collected?
After you submit your application, the Academy team may contact the referees directly using the email addresses you provided. Please ensure your referees are informed and reachable.
Will there be a break around mid-August?
No mid-programme break is planned. The Academy runs continuously from 22 June to 28 August 2026, with activities scheduled throughout the programme.
I am not currently employed (my postdoc ended recently). Am I still eligible to apply?
Yes, you may apply if you meet the eligibility criteria. Please provide two referees who can comment on your recent work (typically your most recent supervisors/managers).
I work in industry (e.g. software developer). Am I eligible?
Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirements (including holding a completed Master’s degree at the time of application) and can commit to the full programme.
I will complete my Master’s degree after the application deadline. Can I still be considered?
No. Eligibility requires a completed Master’s degree at the time of application.
Is the programme open to international candidates?
Yes, the Academy is open to applicants of all nationalities.
Will there be a 2027 or 2028 edition?
We aim to run future editions, but dates and application timelines will be announced once confirmed.
